Why Do So Many People Watch Horror Movies?

Honest question. Every time I turn around, there's a new horror movie with across-the-board low ratings, yet leading at the box office.
Take Gone Girl vs. Annabelle. One critically acclaimed, one not. Yet equal at the box office on opening weekend. I realize there's more to a movie than it's score on Rotten Tomatoes, but what's the draw to these "scary" movies? I never watch them, because their trailers always make them look like garbage (to me, at least).
So for those who watch them, why? Genuine question, not a flame. TIA

In defense, it's not that difficult for a horror film to lead at the box office in October.

I like watching people get brutally murdered.

Movies are entertainment. Horror movies are entertaining.

Also people like to watch horror movies in the theater. It's similar to action and comic book movies.

Not a huge fan of these type of horror movies, but I do love some classic slasher horror movies.
Original Halloween comes to mind. Of the more recent variety, I did enjoy Trick 'r Treat

People like to be scared. It's not that complicated.

I watch because of this:

Simple: Different strokes.

I agree, I'm not sure why people like horror movies, to each their own though

Zest, spice, and excitement. I'm not a horror movie junky, but every once in a while I like to mix it up.

Did you post in the wrong thread?

I don't get why someone watches horror movies or goes to haunted houses. I have zero desire to be scared or to watch people get murdered in cold blood. There are plenty of non-horror movies I have to avert my eyes from because the scene is too gross or too graphic. I cannot watch Tarrantino movies for this reason.
I have a personal theory that people that enjoy watching horror movies are actually sociopaths that would otherwise be murdering humans or pets without the release of a horror film.

I play violent video games to keep me from having to murder people.

I don't understand it either.
