Welcome to the Audiophile and Turntable thread. Ask questions about setups, technical topics, favorite albums and anything else you want. Post pictures of your setup and the album your listening to.
Marco Esquandolas has established himself as the most knowledgable poster on this topic and he is extremely helpful and responsive to questions. He also posted a thread of a good bang for your buck setup here: Bang for Your Buck Audiophile Setup
Thought it would be cool to see what everyone is using, feel free to post pictures, I will soon.
Also would really like to hear suggestions of some albums I should look into in this format.
FOR THE BEGINNERS JUST LOOKING FOR THE BARE BONES SETUP:
If you have a receiver with a phono input, then all you need is the turntable, receiver, RCA cables, and speakers. However, if your receiver does not have a phono input, you will need what is called a phono preamp. The purpose of the phono preamp is to amplify the sound created by your turntable (which is naturally extremely low), and back when records were the primary listening method, receivers all had a built in phono pre amp. These days, it is less common to have a turntable as a primary method of listening, so less receivers have the PHONO input, thus, a phono preamp is necessary. Instead, you hook the turntable into the preamp and THEN into the receiver. Here is a pretty simple diagram.

been listening to this a lot recently. it's damn good. i only got it on iTunes, though. does the vinyl give info on where each song was recorded? i'd really like to know if the black and blu/bright lights was from his terminal 5 show.
i've been playing the new vault package I got from third man records this week…it's a pair of white stripes shows from 2000 in japan. so damn good

I'll be following this.
I want to do a vinyl only set up in my living room. But I haven't decided how I'm going to go about it yet.

Just did a revamp of my system and have just ordered my first turntable. Rega RP8 with the Exact cartridge. I am looking forward to diving into analog and pairing it with my McIntosh tube preamp. It needs to get here soon so I can take the empty shelf back from the wife.
Preamp: McIntosh C2500
Amps: 2 x McIntosh MC352's
Speakers: B&W 802D
I would really like some suggestions on must have albums on vinyl and what pressing to get. I want to start small and see how much I like vinyl and go from there. So , looking at getting some standards in each of the genres I lilke

Receiver - Pioneer SX650
Turntable - I have 2 and can't decide which one sounds better so I switch them out often. A Pioneer PL500(I think, forget which number model but it's the PL line from the early 70's) and a Tecnics SL-Q200.
Speakers - Advent loudspeakers.
My favorite albums I have on vinyl:
1. Ryan Adams & The Cardinals - Follow the Lights
2. Steely Dan - Aja
3. Allman Brothers - Eat a Peach
4. Radiohead - OK Computer
5. Modest Mouse - The Moon & Antarctica

I've only been collecting for about 2 years but I've been blessed with a pretty decent collection. I have about 100 that I really care about and then another 100-150 of some randoms records I was given, through TD actually. My record player is pretty lo quality though and I'm looking to upgrade within the year. Right now I play it through a super old stereo I got when I was young but it surprisingly still has great quality sound.
When I lived in the Garden District I would go to Atomic Pop Shop at least once every 1-2 weeks. I've bought many albums online that I could not fine elsewhere but I don't enjoy it as much. I think the whole ebauty of collecting records is going to the record store and looking through thousands of records for something you want.

OK, I'll play...
The first pic is my main 'table--a VPI Aries 3 with a Lyra cartridge.
This is the rest of the main rig (I have 3 fully functional audio rigs--the others are a bit smaller).
As vinyl records go, I have about 7,000 or so. Probably 2,000 of them are newer reissues on 180/200g pressings.
Enjoy the listen...

My stereo equipment consists of:
Amp - Yamaha M-80
Preamp - Yamaha C-80
Turntable - Yamaha PX-2
CD Players - Nakamichi CD Player 4 and Pioneer PD F100 (100 disc changer)
Cassette - Nakamichi Dragon
Reel-to-Reel - Teac X-1000R
Speakers - JBL L150A
Dynamic Range Expander - dbx 3BX III
I bought this stuff when I was stationed in Korea in the 1980's. Total cost was about $3,000. The sound quality is still excellent, but I don't have many occasions to really crank the volume anymore.

PSA, I know a lot of people on here bash Dave Matthews Band, but I like them, and for those who are interested, the band is reissuing Under the Table and Dreaming in vinyl as part of the 20th anniversary of that album. Here is the info:

Bought a copy of Jason Isbell's album "Southeastern" and it came in Pink vinyl (Breast cancer awareness thing), making it my first vinyl record not to be the color black. Great album too. The only thing I don't like about this pressing is it is very light vinyl so it is flimsy and it is hard to see if the record is clean or not so i have to clean it every time I play it. Go for a thick pressing if you are getting this album, but it is a damn good one regardless.
