I gotta say, I am pleasantly surprised by these little and very inexpensive speakers!!

While they don't produce a great deal of low end, it is still there, just not loud. I imagine if I placed them in a rectangular room with walls on both sides, the bass would increase dramatically. I have them set up now without a side wall within 7 feet, so that is part of the problem...But the mids and highs are really, really good.

The lack of bass should be rectified when the sub arrives Tuesday.

And only $350!

Thanks to RajinCajunz' for giving me first right of refusal before heading to eBay...

New to my small makeshift rig--The Denon DP-62L..

Got it up and runnin last night. I happened to have a Lehman Black Cube phono pre amp not being used, so I put it between the Denon 'table and the Red Wine Audio integrated, and, voila!--music!

The cartridge in it is a Denon DL-55 II...sold for around $50 back in 1982. It is actually a low output (0.3 mv) MC cart, thus needing a phonostage/phono pre that can handle MM and MC loads. The Lehman Black Cube does this. The cart, however, really isn't a barn burner, so I ordered a new Denon DL-103R for it. Hopefully it will be here Tuesday.

Regarding the new Denon cartridge--Denon has made a variation of the DL-103 for 30+ years. It is a pretty good cart for its price...$379...BUT, I found one new in box for sale for $259 at WalMart of all places!!!...for $120 less than MusicDirect, NeedleDoctor, or any other big online audio store.

Wow!--Wal-Mart is carrying decent Denon cartridges for really cheap!

Thanks again RaginCajunz...

Hey Marco.... finally got in touch with your contact. He had me email him what I wanted and he would work something up for me. Just waiting for him to get back in touch. Apparently they were hit with some major sickness and are crazy busy.

Pink Floyd "Animals", 2016 reissue by Bernie Grundman.

This thing sounds fabulous! A slightly different presentation than my original pressing, but he really killed it on these new Floyd reissues. Dead quiet, awesome clarity and instrument separation.

Roger called me today... has the vandys in stock. He said the cables are gonna be special order though b/c of the spades that are needed. He also said that he would feel better getting the same brand cables/interconnects. Said he would look at some audio quest and a couple others that he could work with.

Got the picture that he could get audio quest stuff and have more play/lagniappe with it. He said he was gonna take everything home to figure out what would work best. Probably gonna take a little time b/c he said they are slammed and on top of that he is still sick.

Super nice guy. Apologized like 10 Xs for not getting back with me sooner. Which was not a problem cause I assumed he'd call me today.

Told him to take the reigns, take his time and just let me know what he thought. He said he'd fix me up.

Hey man... playing around with getting things set up, so it will be one less thing to do once the speakers get here. There is supposed to be a marker of sorts on where to put the counter weight. It's either supposed to be a piece of tape or sheet of paper to use to measure the distance. I have neither. All I can find online is that the measurement is supposed to be 1.44cm. Doesn't say from where though.
I tried contacting VPI, but they are shut down until next week. No big deal, but was curious if you might some insight.

The counter weight really doesn't have an exact spot where it should go--it moves back and forth as you balance the cartridge downforce (offset by 1.7g or whatever weight is required by your cart).

Now, Overture may have balanced it before shipping it to you, but that is all moot now...once it is disassembled or even shipped, it will be off--I promise. The amount of movement of the counterweight needed to affect the VTF is minuscule, so there is a good chance that is was knocked out in shipping.

Do you have a tracking force gauge? If not, you can use mine (I actually have a new digital one coming tomorrow).

MusicDirect has them on sale for $49.95 right now--$30 off normal price. You will need to get the VTF (vertical tracking force) correct (that is the downforce of the cartridge/stylus on the record). This is probably one of the most important settings to get right.

If you need to use mine, let me know--I will be around here most of the next couple weeks with no agenda. If you need me to do a full set up for you (VTF, VTA, Azimuth, skating), I will do that for you too.

The folks at VPI are very family and very Jewish--they observe all the holidays by closing shop.

Harry Westfield (father and founder) used to let his wife run all the business end of the show for years--she was a tough lady. She died a few years ago. Since then, his 2 sons have gotten involved in the company and began to grow it by infusing some "young blood" into the company. This is why we have seen new products from VPI that are a little more flexible (built in phono amps, headphone amps, portable tables).

They also began marketing to a different audience with tables that were a little less expensive (prior to the Nomad, the entry was a Scout--$2000 with arm and table and still no cart).

His third son died while in high school--that is why you see the "JMW Memorial Tonearm" on almost all of their mid to high end tables.

Might need you to give me a hand with that... especially since I assumed all I had to do was hmget the counter weight right.
And.... not real sure what skating, vta etc are w/o researching more.

Would I just bring you the whole table and just do it at your place?

Oh and figured I'd need to get a gauge just while researching the counter weight placement

I can come to you or you can come here--either works for me.

Drop me a line when you know when you will be free to do the set up.
