Gulf Coast Seafood Restaurants: Question
Posted on 9/30/14 at 3:27 pm

Are there any restaurants along the Gulf Coast (say Destin to New Orleans) that are worth a 3+ hour drive? I have had a little bit of an infatuation with Peche lately, but have never been. Would you make the drive for Peche or any other restaurant for a simple day trip?

I might go Saturday for lunch.

I've seen that you're a frequent visitor, so I assume you'd make the drive... my girl loves oysters and the pic you posted from Peche looked phenomenal.

I'm not sure I'd drive three hours to eat there and turn around. I'd drive in and spend the night/morning.

That bad, huh?
That's the reason I don't want to go to NO, though. I always talk myself into getting a drink or two and the next thing I know, it's a day later and I've lost my sunglasses and I'm so hungover that when I move, I puke.

I'd do it. It's a pretty unique meal. Dozen (or a few) raw, the raw bar plates of the day, and whole fish of the day with salsa verde or something equally good...can't go wrong. I'd also recommend staying the night.

edited. How young are the kids? I'm not much for being in a car. It impairs my drinking.

No kids ( )
Might go early in the day, eat in the afternoon with a few cocktails, and then ride out later that evening. Would I be able to find Ghost in the Machine anywhere?

I'll likely catch shite for this, but they have imo the best oysters in the city.
I don't eat crackers. These oysters are always ice cold. And the mignonette is as good as it gets.

Depends on what you're looking for. Food- Peche, Entertainment- Caesar's. Don't forget to tune in tonight. Show starts at 6. After the r&b show, it turns into a bounce hall.

The only time I've driven somewhere 3 hours away and come home in the same day, I left at like 6-7AM and then got home around midnight.
I'd do that if I were you. I wouldn't drive 6 hours roundtrip for 5 hours in the city.
Hell, you could even leave at 8AM.. do an early lunch.. hop around drinking or the museum or something.. cocktails before dinner.. Peche.. go home. (Someone stay sober)

I would say peche is worth the drive. But why stop with just one? If you're going to drive all that way for one meal, might as well stay the weekend and eat at a couple of great restaurants in nola

Good idea. Might have to do that.
Do I need to call and make a reservation at Peche?

I don't for lunch. But since the Beard award, I tell everyone to make one. I just sit at the bar, so I don't need one.

Exactly. The food is great, and might be worth the drive.. but we also only spent $54 there. (Got cocktails while waiting for our table, so those were paid separately)
I could see myself driving 3 hours for some extravagant multi-hour experience. For example, my friend is more than willing to drive from Vegas to Napa for French Laundry..
But I would want to stay in the city longer if I drove 3 hours for Peche.
Plus, what's stopping you from staying the night? Do you not have two consecutive days in a row off? Use RateDrop.com and snag a cheap hotel. Hell, if you don't care where, get a hotel in Metairie or something for $60.

They have a place on their website to do it.
