Does putting in a young quarterback ruin them?

Many people have said that if Brandon Harris plays poorly, it will hurt his confidence and he'll be damaged goods like Jarret Lee was after his freshman season. However is this true at all?
Here are Peyton Manning's NFL rookie stats:
Completion Pct% 56.7%, which is 9% lower than his career average
TD-Int: 26-28
Quarterback rating: 71.2, compared to his career average rating of 97.4
The Colts also finished the season 3-13.
So does putting in a freshman quarterback and having him lose a lot of games actually hurt his confidence or does it just give him more experience to grow from? If Harris is willing to work hard, then even if this season is a bust, it can be a great benefit to him.

How in the hell can you compare PM and BH? PM is a pocket passer ![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/icons/casty.gif)

Every QB is different, especially at the college level.

if they are good they will be good. Troy Aikman got his brains beaten in as a rookie in Dallas. Manning got destroyed in Indy. They turned out ok. on the other hand, David Carr always sucked, they played him early, and he still sucked.

The right answer is that it CAN but might not. Stupid questions get stupid answers.

Depends on the player. If he doesn't have the Chest to come back from a tough game, then yes it ruins them. But I don't want that player as my QB anyway, I'd rather have a guy who can shake off a bad pass or bad game and improve from it. If BH turns out to be the type who can't do that like Jarrett Lee and Jordan Jefferson couldn't, fine, recruit new guys who can. But I believe this kid has the maturity and confidence to come back from a bad turn of events. He is the answer at QB that we've been waiting for. He has the mental framework of Flynn with the talent of much more

And yet, the last two Heisman winners have been underclassmen QBs.

FWIW, all indications are this is a composed strong- character kid whose learning curve and physical prowess is gaining momentum. He generates confidence in the huddle and knows his limits.
I don't see "damaged goods" ever being a part of his career or life. And in that respect he is much like PM.

I've never understood treating elite athletes like tender kittens. If we need them to play, put them in and see what they can do. You'll see fairly quickly who has it and who doesn't.
Yes, try your best as a coach to prepare them, but then turn them loose. If a player's confidence is shattered by a couple poor outings, then maybe he doesn't have the mental makeup to be a standout player anyway.
