re: Miles Says Offensive Scheme Is Not The Problem

He is correct in a way. I think Miles needs to get away from the goal line formation at midfield, but it still comes down to execution. It was pretty clear to me there was a lot of that missing. Poorly thrown balls, missed blocks, dropped balls, etc.

this is so wrong on so many levels. the 2011 defense and special teams won a lot of games with jarrett lee being the most efficient QB in the SEC for 8 of them. he had 14 TD's and 1 int before being benched at bama.

He's right it's game plan and play calling.

Does it occur to anyone that the team does not "execute" because it is not very talented? That seems like the best explanation to me.
Posted on 9/25/14 at 8:16 am to White Tiger
Not very talented? I don't think anyone thinks that. We have tons more talent than Moo State, Baylor, Wisconsin, etc, etc. Only teams that should boast an equal talent would be the like of Bama, FSU, maybe Ole Miss. Youth might be a problem but talent is not.

I used to think this Katy... but now I believe he is only doing what he is capable of doing. I think that Les is a great guy but things need to be simple for him. I honestly dont think he would be capable of doing anything else other than what he knows. For those that would argue that I am wrong and he could incorporate changes and execute as well as anybody; my response is that he is not stubborn but poor at problem solving.
Les has never shown me any reason to believe otherwise. What you see is what you get. FTR... I usually dont like what I see.

The problem is not his scheme, it's the complete unwillingness to deviate from it when it's not working. The people claiming that he needs to scrap the power-I don't know what they're talking about. When you have the horses to run the power-I it's still a very effective scheme. The problem Is LSU doesn't have those horses right now, but it's pretty obvious that Les is going to ride or die with that It.
I've already posted this once in the thread, but the most troubling thing to me, at this point, is the hiring of Grimes. Les hired a guy who's system is a zone blocking one, yet les' scheme calls for a man blocking system. I don't know that much about Oline play, but I do that that trying to run the power-I Behind a line that is zone blocking is really, really stupid.

In the the MSU game:
Jamie Keehn punt for 40 yds , Jamoral Graham returns for 21 yds to the MisSt 49 (I don't think LSU allowed 21 yards in punt returns for the entire YEAR in 2011)
Dak Prescott pass complete to Malcolm Johnson for 25 yds
Dak Prescott pass complete to De'Runnya Wilson for 26 yds
Josh Robinson run for 23 yds
Dak Prescott pass complete to De'Runnya Wilson for 44 yds
Josh Robinson run for 66 yds
Dak Prescott run for 56 yds
Dak Prescott pass complete to Jameon Lewis for 74 yds
Josh Robinson run for 20 yds
Josh Robinson run for 22 yds
That doesn't look like an offensive scheme problem to me.

Somebody brought this up on the post-game radio show. It just doesn't make sense. Miles is supposedly an offensive line specialist, so he should know that this is not going to work, no matter how well we execute it.

this. the scheme works. we have seen it work since Miles has been here.
You obviously haven't watched must LSU football. Before last year, every year previous the offense was a fricking shite show. We lose some big playmakers and immediately tuck our heads and start the old JJ offense back up again.
How can Baylor, Oregon, Alabama, and countless other teams lose multiple playmakers year after year, yet still go out and put up big numbers.
The first person to say it, was right. JJ offense is back. There is no arguing that fact. Combine it with the defense playing bad, and you have a performance like this past Saturday.
The game against florida will tell all. If we once again get blown out, then this will be a season where six losses isn't out of the realm of possibility.

LSU seems to have a history of a lot of different players being "unable to execute"; especially in the passing game.
Total offense
Year Rank
2009 102
2010 81
2011 57
2012 77
Passing YPG
Year Rank
2009 97
2010 107
2011 106
2012 94
Those numbers don't kill you when you have a "lights out" defense. When you don't (like last year, and thus far this season), you better be able to put points on the board against good teams.
There's a lot of ways to describe Les Miles' offense, but for me, it is the most "risk averse" offense in college football. Miles is terrified of letting his passing game make plays because of the risk that they might also turn the ball over from time to time. The funny (sad) thing is that in times when LSU has been "forced" to throw (usually to catch up or keep up), the passing game has delivered. See: 2012 2nd half v. Bama; 2012 v. Ole Miss; 2010 v. UF; 2014 2nd half v. Wisc.
Les, you obviously thought your QBs, WRs, TEs, were good players when you recruited them. Give them a chance to make plays!!!!

we can't tweak the offense a bit to include some spread looks to put Jennings and Harris into their comfort zones?
If we don't win a single SEC game, we will still be running power I formations. Miles has shown his stubbornness all these years. The only thing that may hang him out to dry is when there about 50,000 fans in that 100,000 stadium.

who tries to get the run game going when you're down by 17 against a team that is stomping you to the ground?? the same guy who tried to get the same run game going against bama 1/9
les miles has b1g ego. i'm convinced he HAS to goal to get at least 100 yards rushing a game.

Well, if we had the Broncos OL and Mett under center, then yes, the offense wouldn't be a problem. It would be simply out talenting other teams with the I.
But they guys we have don't do that, so the problem is the offense. Miles is wrong.

Bloodworth - I agree that Les is not quick on his feet in the thinking department - his clock mangement problems are a great example of this. I would say that his refusal to change tactics though is totally based on him being stubborn. 01/09 is just one example of this. There are many others. Remember the Tennessee game when we scored on the first and last play of the game? Everything else in the middle was total incompetence on offense.

So you have no problem with the defense giving up nearly 360 yards on just 9 plays?
I swear sometimes I think Tiger fans would rather watch LSU score 45+ points a game and lose all their games than watch LSU win all their games 3-0. When the defense is on the field it's still called 'football'.

That's why they play TWO halves. You don't seem to have any clue as to how the LSU coaching staff approaches winning football games - which is what they are paid to do, and which they do with greater frequency than any other coaching staff in the history of the program.
They are NOT paid to put on an offensive show.
