I had to do a rear axle on like a 90 full-size blazer, in like 93, and it was $2000 IIRC.

Go to a junk yard and get a rear-end,

Or
Go to car-part.com. Pick axle, ship, swap in. And get to pick your gear ratio.
If you pay 3500 and it doesnt come with alloy shafts and a locking diff, you're paying too much.

call blacks auto salvage and get a quote. more than likley it will run about 5-700 used and look on craigslist the go for 4-500 all day.
just to install the rearend is a 300 dollar job at any jap shop you can find.
never buy new with a 10 year old car. its not worth it.

If it's a GM 10 bolt they can be found all day for practically nothing in the 4x4 world. Dudes throw them away left and right for 1 tons. Check out pirate4x4.com, if you find someone close selling one, I guarantee it will be cheap if not free. I sold a matching set (front and rear) from a z71 for $150 a few years back.
Book time on changing a rear axle assy. is around 4-5 hours at a machanic shop and it's super easy to do. In my opinion, the hardest part is getting the u-joint out of your drive shaft (change it while you've got the axle swap going)

Hood Chevrolet loves to rear end customers with rear end scary stories. I had a '07 Avalanche from there new: just after the factory warranty ended I took it there for an idiot light reset and the tech told me that on the road test he heard the rear end making noise and I'd better fix it as it was his experience that Avalanches had a weakness there. He quoted me around the $3500 for parts and labor. I declined. Fast forward to January of this year, I traded the Avalanche in with another 155,000 miles on the suspect rear end with no problem.
I had a '01 Suburban, the rear end is easily replaced and there should be plenty of serviceable used units available. Around $1,000 for parts and labor for a used rear end, as long as you don't have any other issues. If you are going to keep the rig a while, change the rear brake pads and rotors (if necessary) while you have it apart.
Ditto on the U-Joint, I'd probably change both while I had it down. They are 13+ years old.

hell no. Check craigslist and etc. You can get a used one for less than 1000 and find some one to slap it in for less than 1000. Should be pretty straight forward, coil over suspension.

If they are telling you that you need an entire new rear axle assembly, then I hope your axle is snapped in two, otherwise they are FOS.
That price is ridiculous as well
