Example of why replay in baseball is so difficult

brewers 2 @ Cardinals 1 bottom of the 8th with 2 outs
Holiday at the plate runners on first and third hits a slow chopper up the middle.
2nd baseman can't make the play at 2nd so he goes to first to get Holliday and Holliday slides head first and looks to be safe but umpire calls him out
They review it and Holliday is called safe but what to do with carpenter who was at third before the pitch and may or not have scored on the play had Holliday been called safe originally
Umpires leave carpenter at third costing the cardinals the game tieing run.
I personally think he probably scores on the play but you can't say that for sure and I'm sure I'm biased. Idk exactly what the rule is but I'm pretty sure it's left to the umpire/New York's discretion and I feel like there's gotta be some way to have a concrete rule that is clear to determine what to do with the baserunner in a situation such as this
To be clear, this is not a bitch thread bc it cost the cardinals a run. In fact we just tied it up anyways but the point of this is to point out remaining issues with replay that need to be ironed out

Yeah. That's a weird play. Almost wish you could decline that.

Well in fairness, if it weren't for replay the inning would've been over and we would've never had another shot at the run so there's that
ETA: and the cardinals announcers just paraphrased "ball never lies" in the whitest way possible 0

Just like a fumble recovery in football by the defense when the original call wasn't a fumble.
You look at the video and see what the runner on 3rd did. If he ran home on the play he scores, if he stayed at 3rd.. he stays at 3rd.

Well he was running home so.......
And if you doubt me I'll repeat there was 2 outs, why the hell wouldn't he be running home?

He was about a quarter of the way home when the first baseman caught it.
I think if the first baseman goes home immediately he's out. If he hesitates though Carpenter would have been safe.

Was he not at least 3/4 of the way down the 3rd base line by the time the out was called at 1st?
ETA: bbap just answered it. Is there a video of the play?

It wasn't a force play. You can't make the last out at home. I'm sure he waited until the throw went to 1st to run.

It's in the videos section of mlb at bat if you have it.

The way it was explained in the OP, I assumed it was a ground ball deep in the hole, which is why he couldn't throw to second.

No it was a chopper over the mound

As bbap said he was about a fourth of the way down, would've been a very close play
Again, I'm not saying the cardinals necessarily should've been given the run just that I wish there was a more concrete rule to determine it

Where was the ball hit? OP's pbp sucked.

Uhhhh I called it "a slow chopper up the middle" what more do you want?
To give you an Idea I believe the second baseman fielded it right in front of second base

I think the main reason he would have been safe is because the first baseman looked back to ump to see if he got the call.
