The other night on my ride home from work my "check battery light" went on. Stopped to grab a bite to eat, came out and DEAD.

Jumped it a couple times and it dies less than 5 minutes after unhooking the cables, even with extended jump time. The battery won't hold a charge.

I assume it is the alternator or a bad connection, but the dealership said buy a battery and and if that doesn't work out, bring it in for service.

The battery is not in stock any place I have checked (Autozone, Interstate, Walmart) Stealership price on a new battery is $305 and Interstate isn't much better at $245.

2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6L V6 with 38k miles. It is an Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) battery that is stored under the passenger seat.

Any advice? Any ideas on who may have it in stock? Thanks!

Do you like having your butthole enlarged via your wallet? I'd get a voltmeter and check the alternator output first, AGM batteries don't usually fail suddenly. Then look up the Deka battery for your jeep, probably a lot cheaper and very good batteries.

And do it soon. A bad alternator can quickly turn into a bad alternator and a bad battery.

I'm with the guys who are saying that it's the alternator. Your battery normally can't get so dead that your car will die without having a bad alternator in the mix too.

The dealer ought to replace that alternator under warranty with it being that close to the warranty mileage limit. Most dealers worth their salt have blurred lines on that sort of thing.

Car has absolutely no power. Autozone couldn't even run a check on the alternator.

Go to Wholesale Battery and they will check your alternator for you. How old is the battery? If you buy a new battery without knowing if the alternator is bad, and the alternator turns out to be bad, the new battery will just drain in a few days also. WBC will have the battery if that's all you need. If you need an alternator they will recommend someone to go too.

Since the Jeep will not hold a charge at all, I plan on buying a new battery and then testing the alternator. If it is the alternator, the dealership may honor my warranty being that it is only 2k miles over the expiration and under 3 years. If they do not honor the warranty I will bring it elsewhere.

Does this sound like a good plan of action or am I doing it wrong?

O'Reilly at Tom drive and Airline have them in stock for $185.
If I am not mistaken, the battery is there just to start the vehicle and the alternator charges the battery and keeps the vehicle running. I agree that it is most likely the alternator but when you change the part make sure that you give your battery a full charge before installing so that you don't cause damage to the brand new alternator. Seems a little soon for a new vehicle...

UPDATE: Got a new battery and yep, it's the alternator.

Now to try to hustle with the dealership to see if they can help me out seeing as it is still under 3 years old and only 2k over the milage on the warranty.

If that falls through, any rec's on a shop in Baton Rouge to replace an alternator?
