Choosing an NHL team to follow (STL Blues, it is - questions on pg. 7)

For years now, I've been interested in seriously following hockey and for the entire season (instead of just showing up for the playoffs), but I always manage to put it off until late April has suddenly crept up on me. I plan on putting an end to that this year, but I need to settle on a team before I can take the plunge. With Les Alexander seemingly giving up on bringing a team to Houston and the zero percent chance that New Orleans gets a team, I have to choose a sports team from a city I have no connection to and I'm not sure how to decide.
As someone who knows next to nothing about hockey or the goings-on of the NHL, I have little reason to lean toward any team. The only criteria that I can come up with is:
1. The organization needs to be competent and truly committed to winning
2. The organization isn't the Dallas Stars
(Note: I'd be hesitant to jump on the bandwagon of a perennial Stanley Cup favorite, but I wouldn't mind witnessing what a decent-to-good hockey team is supposed to look like.)
I should add that I have a very mild interest in the Oilers, soley based on their name, colors, and logo (that being said, I'm not really familiar with every NHL team's color scheme or logo). What prevents me from just choosing them is that I know very little about the team, other than they have been less than stellar and have gone through a number of changes recently, and it would feel a little strange following a team located a couple thousand miles away, in another country (though I'm not completely opposed to the idea).
TL;DR - Essentially, I'm asking for someone to pitch me a team that isn't the NHL equivalent of the Yankees or the NHL equivalent of the Browns (with a good name, color scheme, and logo being a plus).
So, hockey fans of the MSB (I know a few of you are out there), would any of you be kind enough to help me in my time of need?
If not, we can just pretend this thread never happened.
ETA: I apologize if this post is a mess, I'm not feeling particularly well today.

Do you remember enjoying a particular team or player last playoffs?
The los angeles Kings did crazy shite.
Penguins, capitals, Blue jackets (on this board) and blackhawks are popular.
Red wings and Canadiens are your Yankee equivalent. Toronto used to be good 50 years ago. Edmonton is usually awful.

The Stars are the perfect team to start following. Best GM in the league. Two young superstars in Benn and Seguin that the team is building around. Returned to the playoffs for the first time in many years this past season.
However, if you refuse to make the smart decision, I'd go Oilers or Blues. The Oilers just can never seem to put it together, but they have some outstanding young talent that could be special in a year or two.
The Blues just got new jerseys that look awesome. They are a fun team to watch and even have team USA hero TJ Oshie.

Maybe the Stars since their close-ish to you? I have followed the Nashville Predators ever since Atlanta lost their team, but they have been pretty mediocre the last two seasons.
The Stars had some really stout teams back in the late 90's and early 2000's, lead by the holder of the record for most goals scored by a US player: Mike Modano, so there's that. Their new uniforms look frickin stupid, though.

I meant historically. Sorry for not clarifying
I watched the Devils growing up cause espn always showed them, and their jerseys looked cool. Looking back, their brand of hockey was terrible, but effective . Martin broduer defies time.

Take it from a Sharks fan, they will drive you insane. I will suggest the Minnesota Wild. I saw a lot of their younger guys come through Houston when the Aeros were here and the team is improving, they just need to get over the Blackhawk hump in the playoffs.

How dare you
In all honest, I completely agreed when they first revealed the new uniforms. After a year, I think they are great and a big improvement.

I used to follow Gretzky. I would follow any team from Nashville because I love that city. So I would choose somewhere you like to visit.

The new Stars jersey is terrible.

You will get called a bandwagon fan, and I am biased, but I would follow the Blackhawks. I was a fan when I was younger and started following them heavily a few years back before I moved to Chicago.
As someone who is looking for a team to follow, they are a good one because:
1) they are a winner. Always makes it easier to get excited
And
2) they have two young stars, Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews, who both signed matching 8 year deals in the offseason

The LA KINGS, no doubt!! The Kings didn't win a Stanley Cup from their inception in 1967 all the way until they finally won one in 2012 (and they won it again last season). The team is packed with young, dynamic players and one of the best (if not THE best) goalie in the league, Jonathan Quick. They are unquestionably one of the most exciting teams in recent memory -- I suggest you watch a copy of their final game vs. the NY Rangers in this year's Stanley Cup Finals and see if you're not a fan of theirs by the end of the game. I've never been so tense through a hockey game in my entire life, as a player or as a fan. Not to mention, the greatest player of all time (GRETZKY) played for the Kings.
Some other teams I'd suggest, if you choose not to like the Kings, would be either the Chicago Blackhawks or the Pittsburgh Penguins. However, I'll tell you like this -- I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, and I'm a diehard Kings fan... 'nuff said.

I used to like the Wild. Now I hate them more than the Red Wings for moving the Aeros to N Dakota or wherever they went
