Possibly worst final full-time season for an all-time great ever?

.249 AVG
.298 OBP
.297 SLG
.595 OPS
70 OPS+
-.2 WAR
19 extra base hits/15 GIDP

Any other all-time greats have a final season worse than this? Say cutoff is last season with 120+ games.

i dislike jeter as much as anyone on the planet, but every player's final season is awful when not using cattle steroids.

He's ran out of gas these last few months.

And tbh, I think he's kind of checked out mentally. He's just ready for it to be over. You can only motivate yourself so much when the team is so god damn bad and there's almost no chance you can make the playoffs.

The last few weeks have been really rough on him, and he showed his frustration for the first time tonight. I just wish it was over. It's painful.

I'd go with Ron Santo, who played 117 games because of injury- I know he misses your 120 game cut off, but not by leaps and bounds. The difference in Career WAR between them is exactly how much worse Santo was in his last year, otherwise they'd be identical.

.221 BA
.293 OBP
.299 SLG
.591 OPS
-1.6 WAR
18 XBH/16 GDP

And Jeter at least contributed 9 steals. None for Santo.

He's almost 40 years old and he's been in the league almost 20 years. You really expected him to do anything worth a shite this year?

Biggio's was pretty bad.

shite, Ripken had a negative WAR his final year. They're 40+ years old, what do you expect. Sucks that he's hurting his team making a push for the postseason though.

All 12 times I've watched NYY this year he's gone 0-4 and grounded meekly into a killer DP

Biggio wasn't quite that bad but still a pretty bad season from a guy that owned most franchise records.

.251 AVG
.285 OBP
.381 SLG
.666 OPS
71 OPS+
-2.1 WAR

Also, Jeter's swing made him due for a quick decline at the end of his career.

His season two years ago was amazing, all things considered. However, when you heard scouts saying in spring training this year that his bat speed was way down, this was inevitable. He managed to hover around .275 for a lot of the season, which was pretty amazing in itself.

He's got an inside-out swing that revolved around him driving the ball the other way, even on inside pitches. If you don't have bat speed, that's almost impossible to do. When pitchers missed out over the plate (especially up in the zone), he was able to hit the ball hard to the opposite field this year. But if pitchers ran him inside or kept it low and away, he really struggled (as expected).

He's never really hit the ball hard to left in the last five or six seasons. Now that his hands have slowed down, he's had to cheat a little bit and has found himself out in front of a lot of pitches, resulting in a lot of slow rollers to the left side.

It's hard to make an adjustment in a swing you've had for your entire life. Everyone loses bat speed, but it's affected him a lot more than others.
