What I mean is that you can't laugh as hard at the same jokes over and over again. You still think it's funny, but it doesn't have the same impact that it did when you first saw it.
That's why I consider Chaplin's movie "The Great Dictator" to be my favorite comedy. For example, the globe scene is so utterly brilliant that it has the same impact on me as it did the first time I saw it. I feel there is more to comedy than how gut-bustingly funny a joke is.
But that's my humble opinion.

All these posts, some of which list over 10 movies, and no one has mentioned The Jerk. I'm disappointed in every single one of you.
That's because it isn't very funny. There. I said it.
Blazing Saddles is my favorite for sure.

The Jerk
Caddyshack
Christmas Vacation
Stripes
All excellent options. Part of the enjoyment is when you see the movie, who you are with, and if you are in the right frame of mind for a comedy.
One that is often overlooked but high in my ranking:
Funny Farm
Caddyshack
Christmas Vacation
Stripes

Holy Grail
Airplane
Blazing Saddles
Anchorman
Dumb and Dumber
My favorite scene is probably from Young Frank when they're singing "Puttin' on the Ritz." When the monster sings his line, I lose it every time.

Step Brothers, easily!
I can't think of another comedy that I laugh as hard at. Everything about Step Brothers is perfect.

Caddyshack, Coming to America and National Lampoons Christmas Vacation.
I think Murray in Caddyshack creates three of the funniest scenes ever. Dalai Llama, Cinderella Story, and Cannonball It.

Don't take this the wrong way, but are you young? Like in your teens? Just want to see if I'm nuts.

48.
There are plenty older movies I used to think were funny. I loved The Jerk - saw it at the theater as a kid. I raved about it for decades, then recently talked my wife and kid into watching it. I was embarrassed for having liked it. Same with Beverly Hills Cop. My kid had some friends sleep over (14-15) and they were flipping through Netflix. Tlaked them into watching it. Didn't make it through 20 minutes. Many movies are associated with certain life periods or events, and are better in our memories than they are in reality. I love Young Frankenstein, and my kid and I have started watching it every Halloween, but it tries too hard and overplays some of the jokes. It's like they go out of their way to point out the joke, when just leaving it there would have been way funnier. Lots of "classic" comedies just are not that funny.
