McConaughey on talk show - on changing the types of roles he took

Walked into the kitchen for lunch and turned on the kitchen counter tv. It was on a talk show of Queen Latifah and she is interviewing MM.
I thought it was interesting when she asked him about changing the types of roles he took. He said he wanted to do different roles and talked to his wife and they decided to it and he predicted "things are gonna get drryyyy" and that in fact "they god drrryyyyy" for about 2 years until he approached a kind of anonymity, at least enough to "become someone's new idea".
I thought it was kind of interesting that even a well known and successful actor like him struggled to get good roles.

I looked at his IMDB page after seeing this thread and it is kind of interesting.
Fool's Gold in 2008
Tropic Thunder
Surfer, Dude
Ghosts of Girlfriends Past in 2009
Lincoln Lawyer in 2011
Bernie (haven't seen)
Killer Joe (haven't seen)
The Paperboy in 2012
Mud
It was definitely a 180 for him but probably the best decision the guy every made.

There is a very select few, even within the "famous actors" circle who can basically pick and chose roles without auditions or competing

Yeah, men can play a playboy until they reach decrepit old age.

Tom's getting just past that at 58.
MM's got another 10 to 12 years.

Bernie is a great movie. But jack black carries it IMHO. MM is good, but JB was excellent

I know he had a "rom-com" spell for a bit, but he had quite a few "substantial" roles that are continuously overlooked. Some favorites -
Thirteen Conversations About One Thing (2001)
Lone Star (1996)
Frailty (2001)
And of course obvious ones -
Contact (1997)
Dazed & Confused (1993)
Time to Kill (1996) among others.
He has (is) building quite a filmography for himself. Cannot wait for Interstellar!
