Athletes get paid millions of dollars because that's what the market has decided is the price of labor. And in a league like the NBA with only 450 employees the labor pool is relatively small and so they'll divide up a large piece of the pie. Don't want them to make so much? Don't watch and as ratings plummet so will TV $ and then salaries. Funny thing is the people who complain the most tend to be the most "free market Americans" I know.
ETA: The hiding behind teachers and firefighters is the usual: "Why don't we pay our teachers, nurses etc that much".

People still complain about athletes being overpaid?

I thought about playing in the NHL, but you're on the road so much, you have no time to spend with your wife and kids. And I really want a wife and kids.

Athletes earn what they get. Now actors get way too much money. That is why I support pirating.

Lawlz. Atheletes provide me with hours of entertainment. I don't care how much they make.

Teachers and firemen are public employees. We can actually do something about their payscale by taking it up with your local government. Pro athletes work for a private company and thus we cannot affect their salaries except by not watching their product.
But if people care so much about firemen and teachers not making enough, you can always do something about it.

i support the players making that money and more. they are the workers of their industry. I'd much rather they get it than the fricking owners.
i do have to explain this sometimes to other liberals but once i do they change their tune pretty quickly. I always, always, always support the players in labor negotiations.

Adam carolla talked at length about this today on his podcast but was speaking more about the college football coach salaries versus the deans, teachers etc. give it a listen. Essentially he just said the more money you bring in/ people you attract, etc the more you should make, which I agree with.
