Sounds like a review of supply and demand principles are in order.
Supply goes up or remains steady while demand goes down, prices go down.
Demand remains steady while supply continuously exceeds demand or rises at a constant rate, price goes down.
Decrease supply to come back into equilibrium with demand, and you're back to par.
ETA:
Yep. They most certainly will. All they will do is allow to their market share decrease. Stop supplying to bring prices back up, someone else will fill that void. Especially if they are working with lower COGS.

I understand that, but this would be an artificial inflation of supply and demand just to try and drive prices up. I'm just wondering if the consumer is going to put up with it.

I was actually referring to the shrimpers, not you so my apologies for any confusion. But to answer your question, the customers won't. They'll move on to other providers and comps except those who (like me) will buy local product and support local economy before they do so for oversea imports despite costs. Which could push the prices higher for local shrimp despite artificial inflation caused by forced reduction of supply by the shrimpers which in turn the rise in prices would increase their desire to provide the necessary supply due to those increased prices, which will then again cause supply to exceed demand which will again decrease the price and resort in the same cycle again.

That's a mouthful.
I refuse to buy foreign, I would just stop buying altogether. The restaurants are the ones with the tougher decisions.

You'd be surprised how many restaurants lie about where their seafood comes from.

I have no doubt that this happens, but I don't know that my taste buds could tell the difference.

So you're saying McDonalds are lying by calling the McRib when it's not ribs?

shrimp are a commodity like anything else. there is no set market price. Shrimpers have never grasped this concept.

Shrimp prices for certain sizes have been sky rocketing
16-20's and 20-30's are getting ridiculous. If this shite keeps up, you will be able to get prawns 6-8(ez peels) for the same price as 16-20's(p&d's) (numbers are per pound)
part of it, was Indonesia/Bangladesh had viruses in their ponds, so the American Shrimpers were able to bend people over.
Same shite happened when the East Coast was only ones pulling oysters up, they shoved it up the consumers arse.
When the Salmon farms in Chile found a cold virus in their farm raised salmon, it was almost 2 years before they were back at full production. Companies who sold Norwegian,Canadien,Faroe, etc were bending over the customers. 2$+ a lb the shite went. There was no shortage, just no Chilean(atlantic) salmon, so companies shoved higher prices on their other salmon onto the consumer.

I always have a smile at people who claim free market is hurting them.
Like things would be better if the govt helped stabilize the prices.

I wonder if it will ever come to this. I still don't believe they'll strike or it will be short lived, but attempting to drive up the prices by striking is only going to hurt them, like others have said.

People will buy the Indo/Bangla shite. Which is where most of shrimp is coming from.
I see the brands and companies, and the indo and bang shite is 3/4 of the stuff i see bring shipped and sold.

Guessing they probably classify themselves as "conservatives" too
All they're going to do is give the Vietnamese a short term pay bump

I'm in the shrimping industry. I work on my dad's shrimp boat. The problem is everyone took their oil spill money and put down payments on these big boats that they can't afford to pay the bank notes on. It's their fault. But for the price on shrimp to drop over a dollar since the 18th of August is outrageous. Some of them are greedy yes. but then there are the people trying to make an honest living.
Also Viets can afford to work because the government hands everything they need to them. New boats, equipment, etc.
ETA: I have nothing to complain about, we have a small boat so we can actually make a profit because of low fuel consumption. But we also have the option of bringing them back home and sell directly if need be.

But you agree that the consumer shouldn't suffer because they made poor life decisions right? It makes them no better than the scum that's capable of working, but would rather live off the government teat.

What's the normal ebb and flow of shrimp prices?

Yes it's 100 percent their own fault.

40/50's at the start of the season were 2.45 a pound. Once you start getting a smaller count take off .15 to .20 cents a bound. Same for bigger shrimp. just add 15-20cents
