Calling OT Mechanics: Explorer stops accelerating

My mom has a 2012 Ford Explorer and sporadically the car will stop accelerating. Engine still running, but that's it. Hopefully she is on a road with a shoulder she can bail onto at the time. It has been to the dealership 3 times and they can not find a problem. Ford is not being cooperative either. Any thoughts? About to get a lawyer, she needs a vehicle she can trust.

check engine light come on?
what engine is it?
it sounds a little bit like the ecoboost problems they had on the F150
i know the same engine is put into the Explorer Sport....this is just a thought

Yes, check engine light comes on. It is the V6 3.5, not the eco 4.

does the engine vibrate/shake when she tries to accelerate?

Likely removing her foot from the gas pedal.

The engine acts like it is neutral. Restart it and everything is fine.

Coil packs possibly going out.

You would think it would be something a little more complicated than a fuel filter. The last time the dealership had it for a week. This has been going on for over a year.

Eco on the explorer in 2012 is a 4 cylinder 2.0 I thought. This is a non eco v6.

They also put the 3.5 Eco in the sport model only
If the engine is revving and not accelerating, it's gotta be transmission related I would think

Does it have traction control?

As if it's in neutral? So, motor rpms shoot up but vehicle does not? Is this what you're saying?

BTW, there's really only two people on this whole website you need to be getting this sort of mechanical advice from. That's me and greasemonkey.
Maybe one or 2 other confirmed posters and that's it.

Wrong
Please link us up where there was a twin turbo 3.5 v6 option in the 2012 Explorer.
