That type of filter can be used to replace the 3/4 inch thick return air filter. Just swing the grating down on your return air and replace the existing filter with that one. You may need to push the insulation in the duct back a little to make it fit.
This is assuming it's the correct width and length.

On my system it's not near the grating, it's in the attic next to the unit. Who knows where the OP's is though.
