Walking vs. Jogging calories burned

A 200-pound person burns about 426 calories during a 60-minute walk at 3 mph and 586 calories during a 60-minute walk at 4.5 mph.
Where's the incentive to jog/run if I could burn almost 600 calories in an hour by walking? 600 seems like a good amount of calories to burn daily to stay in shape.

well you could compare walking to jogging for better data not walking to walking

Can you do the calorie math for a 220lb person with a laser rocket arm?

Cause you would burn more calories by jogging or would be able to use less time for same results.

What about comparing it to a 30 minute jog?

Now do the analysis on a 60-minute jog. The delta would be your incentive.

I'm not running unless something is chasing me

I can get 200 calories/mile burned at a 6mph pace. That's 30 minutes to get 600 calories instead of 600 calories in an hour of walking.

The incentive is the 160 calories.....

Some people don't have the time for a 60-minute walk and would rather run/jog and get it done in less time. 3 miles @ 7.5 mph for 24 minutes will burn approximately the same number of calories as the 60-minute @ 3 mph walk. Better cardio for jogging/running, but possibly worse on the joints. To each his own.

So you can burn those 600 calories in half the time?

That's way wrong if all of the treadmills I've ever used are accurate at all. A 7.5 mile per hour pace is about 140 calories per mile.
ETA: if you go to sparkpeople.com, they calculate a 7.5 mph pace to burn 160 calories per mile for a person that weighs 200 lbs

Well for one it's not 60 vs. 60. More like 60 vs. 30.

But what if you want to workout for an hour and not run? It seems like walking would be nearly as effective as jogging, no?

Walking 30 minutes a day 5 days a week will add years to your life.
Take it to the bank.
