VB is just willingly ignorant enough to work for CNN. He's trying to derail the thread much the way that CNN is detailing logical, factual discussion of current events.
The few facts we know about this case are not as emotionally compelling as the agenda. Being honest would not advance the cause nor would it attract more emotionally vested viewers.
CNN has given incredibly biased anti-gun personalities their own shows and puts anchors that are willfully ignorant on the subject in front if the camera. They are a propaganda tool, not a news network.

I think the BATF's website is a much more reliable source of information for these matters than wikipedia, and I know for a fact that as for as the BATF and the FBI are concerned, the difference between semiautomatic and automatic is as big as the difference between lightning bug and lightning. In other words, it's not just semantics.
I was once pulled over for a traffic violation when I had a semiautomatic gun in my glove compartment. When asked to produce my license and registration, I informed the cop that I a gun in my glove compartment, at which point he walked to the passenger side of the vehicle and removed the gun so that I could get my papers. After he finished writing the ticket, he retunred the gun and I drove off without incident. If that semiautomatic weapon had been an automatic weapon, I would have been looking at some serious time in federal prison, unless I could produce a ton of paperwork that is about as hard to get as joining the CIA.

I knew he was gay. I don't dislike him. He seems like a bright and articulate guy and I like seeing Louisiana folks do well on the big stage. He's just so wrong on so many issues.
He can be wrong and still be educated on this one. He seems willfully ignorant (as do you) on this particular issue and I'm just concerned as to why.

The difference between assault rifle, assault weapon and semiautomatic weapon is just semantics, as you say. But as soon as you introduce the word "automatic" to the discussion, you're no longer debating semantics from a legal standpoint, and legality is the point of this debate.
EDIT: The reason that folks get upset when people try to blur the line between automatic weapons and semiautomic weapons is because in the U.S., automatic weapons are already as hard to get as semiautomatic weapons are in Japan, and no one's trying to make them easier to get.
