Fishing today, Snapper limits suck

Went out of Cocodrie off shore. Caught 6 AJs, tuna, cobia, a bunch of mangrove snapper.
But guess what we caught the most of? Red Snapoer. Caught at least 15. Threw them all back of course because they are "over fished" according to the powers that be. Complete BS.

So are those rare aj's you caught!

You caught those AJs just in time. They are closed from next week through the rest of the year! Who the hell is over fishing AJs?

Florida...

We went out in that same area...it took us no time to catch the AJs...I dont see how they are overfished.

We limited out on the AJs within the first hour or so. Kept catching and releasing them the rest of the day. Today's trip was originally planned for a couple of weeks from now but when we found out the season was closing early we jumped on an opening today instead.

they aren't...Louisiana just doesn't catch as many as Florida...
which is completely retarded because the western Gulf is where AJ's spawn.
The eastern gulf is where the smaller AJ's are located and they get slaughtered over there

Much longer run to deep water for most of LA unless you are leaving out of Venice. That would be my reasoning. The Gulf fishery is such a cluster frick. They should set the limits on a state by state basis LA is the one getting screwed due to all the artificial habitat created by the oil&gas structures.

What yall catching AJs on? We caught 2 last week. Going out for one more trip this weekend for them.

They'll hit damn near anything. Butterfly jigs are the most fun to me. A live hardtail is automatic though.

yea i love the butterfly jigs but Snapper hit that on the way down lol.

The reason LA doesn't catch as many, IMO, is:
1. they are towards the bottom when it comes to taste for offshore fish. Grouper and Snapper are 10x better
2. they are a pain in the arse to deal with. They kick your arse for 15 minutes for a mediocre eating fish?
3. Tuna are just a little farther

I think Amberjack taste great. I like it grilled better than snapper but snapper is way better fried.
ETA: FRESH amberjack taste great.

Nah. Grill/oven FTW
shite, fresh snapper with tony's and lemon juice in a pan with olive oil is about as simple as you can get and is delicious.

We used live hardtail we snagged up on a rig closer to shore.

yea i like the meaty texture it has compared to snapper, grilled snapper flakes apart with is great for tacos but i like the body of AJs if im eating a slab of it

If that's what you're looking for, he also mentioned that you are basically far enough to catch tuna, which is far better.
