LHSAA and the Ruination of HS Football

This last decision by the LHSAA, to allow John Curtis and Evangel to "play up" in the "private school sector" of the playoffs is the final straw.
They have officially destroyed high school football.
The epic idiotic decision to force a separate playoff system of public and private schools makes both of the championships irrelevant.
And now, aside from determining seeding, they have made the regular season completely irrelevant, as every school makes the playoffs.
What is the point of this? Is the public schools' jealousy and hatred of Curtis/Evangel worth destroying the whole thing? And why are the larger private school being punished with allowing Curtis/Evangel to play up, yet they were denied this when it would have been an issue for their beloved West Monroes and Acadianas before the split?
I'm done with high school football until this matter is fixed (lord only knows if that will ever happen), and what I'd like to see is the Catholic high schools around the state (maybe some private non-Catholics schools as well) drop completely out of the LHSAA and form their own league/association. It has happened in other states, and it could/should be done here.

I fail to see how the large privated schools are being punished. If they want to suspend all academics in favor of building a football powerhouse they are free to do so just like Curtis/Evangel.

There was no need for 5 state champions, much less 9. Personally, I'd like 1 championship that all schools play for - but that's not likely. At the very most - 3 divisions, a super division for powerhouses, Large School, and Small School.

Does anyone know if there is a timeline for the way things are currently setup (the public/private split, allowing schools to play up), or is this indefinite/permanent?

quote:Yes, if you use the term "destroy" loosely.

Get a grip. The LHSAA signed its death notice when they allowed the split in the first place.

Good, we won't miss you.

sadly I think it is permanent... you saw the votes when the individual classes got to vote on coming back together. there were more schools for a split than there originally were
the best people can hope for is that after reclassification this year, things look more sensible (32 team brackets in certain classes become 16, etc.) and fair. maybe we go back down to 4 nonselect and 3 select classes, but everyone likes saying they made the playoffs

Texas has 12 championships in public HS football alone (six classifications with two divisions in each). Plus about 2-3 different private school leagues which have NEVER been affiliated with UIL.

not in nonselect 3A, 4A, and 5A...

there better be a way for public schools to play them if they want. point is, staying under the LHSAA umbrella was the best thing to happen for all schools. it keeps them following the same rules and teams are guaranteed to be able to play each other if they want. with a separate association you're not guaranteed either of those two things

This was discussed when the break up plan was being put together... I think the Clarion Herald had an article/op-ed about forming a separate league. Not sure how serious the separate league was considered but it was discussed.

This is exactly why the split will eventually be a complete split, if not sooner than later. Private schools have to compete for kids, so why would they voluntarily hinder themselves to help out public schools? I think what you are seeing in the NCAA will creep up into the LHSAA within a decade. Privates actually would be better off without the publics, especially at the gates when they play urban public schools. I can tell you that the privates are already taking a big hit money wise now that they lost 1-2 playoff games. That's 10-20k a season. That's a big deal for them.

Don't think it is completely off the table. The last schools to get stuffed in with Curtis and Evangel are arguably the most powerful. The publics have voted out the privates, and the small privates have voted to let the powerhouses move up. The 5A private schools no longer have any way to vote themselves into their own league. They would have to actually leave the LHSAA. If Curtis and Evangel start winning titles in D1, the Catholic schools may get restless.

I just hope it will happen so that Simsboro and East Iberville are no longer helping to make rules for 5A schools...
just as long as big public schools get to go with them... I want to see a small school LHSAA squirm when the public and private powerhouses are doing their own thing

I don't think there will ever be 2 public leagues. I want to say the NFHS will only recognize one league in each state so that wouldn't work out. I'm sure the private schools wouldn't worry about it too much since Texas does just fine with TAPPS.

but Texas never had a history of public and private playing together... they can have TAPPS and the UIL, but only one of them matters

To an extent yes, but nothing is stopping TAPPS from becoming a strong private league. They have the numbers and the student population to be at least as good as any private league Louisiana could put together. It's obvious the publics don't want to play with the privates anymore, so the privates shouldn't feel the need to stick with a group which doesn't want to be together.

Every school doesn't make the playoffs this year. In fact in 1a, only the top 16 make it in the private sector.
