Complete liver failure? Probably and mercifully not much. Her ammonia level is probably way up there.

Give them benzos, such as diazepam, to protect against seizures, irregular heartbeats. Give fluids and correct for any electrolyte and vitamin abnormalities. Monitor vitals.
Some hospitals will just give them liquor/beer and let them drink in the hospital.

Sorry to hear Northshore. This happened to my brother when he was about 40. Literally drank himself to death. He turned very yellow the last two weeks or so of his life. The liver stopped filtering the blood. He died about a week after being admitted to the hospital. He was unconscious that whole week.

I can't even imagine what is going thru her head right now. That is so shitty.
It's sad. My grandfather died of this as well. It is no way to go.

If they are terminal and have like 3 days left then why not? Its more compassionate than letting them suffer thru withdrawals the last few days of their lives.

Is that worse than living in a van down by the river?

I'm not sure. She was hard to contact at that time. He does have a host of medical issues associated with it, diagnosed or not. That's probably the most I'll say about it anymore (no offense to you). She's paying a heavy price, and I don't feel great rehashing all her failures, even anonymously
Of course. I apologize for being so forward. Forgive me.

Oh no, not terminal people. People who drink a fifth of whiskey a day will get a shot every hour on the hour if they come into the hospital for something else. The logic is "Why give them something else (valium, for one) that they can get addicted to when I can just give them what they're already missing?"
Heavy drinkers come to the hospital for other stuff all the time. This wasn't meant to apply to the severe, terminal alcoholics as described in the OP.

Update: Thanks to everyone that contributed. The info posted by our resident OT medical staff was accurate. She passed this morning in the company of her mother.

For reasons none of us can understand, this young woman went on a path that indicated that she did not want to live anymore.
I hope she finds peace wherever we go after we die.

stories like this show how horrible alcoholism is, and it is a disease. thankfully it is treatable, however success depends on the willingness of the patient, and many sufferers never get a chance to recover. alcohol really is cunning, baffling and powerful.
