A senior White House official said on Wednesday that the United States would consider using American ground troops to assist Iraqis in rescuing Yazidi refugees if recommended by military advisers assessing the situation.

Would eventually allow obama to say he removed the troops twice.

It wasn't his idea to remove them the first time

I listened to the State Dept Briefing...this administration is bizarre. The amount of verbal maneuvering to avoid telling us what we already know is just nuts.
"I reiterate, no combat role for troops"
"But could be a security role?" "Maybe"
"Its a dangerous part of the world, couldn't there be combat?" "These aren't going to be troops with a combat role."
"But its possible they'd have to get in a security role if attacked" "Potentially, but I don't want to comment on that yet."

But he sure laid claim to it like a Sooner in 1889 Oklahoma. well, he did for a while.

But Obama said he ended the war in Iraq already.

But he says if Bush 41 and Bush 43 can start a war in Iraq, he can too.
BTW, this is another example of how Obama reacts to events after they get out of control instead of planning for eventualities.
He stated he was getting out of Iraq. If he would have stated the goal was to get out of Iraq providing circumstances there allowed us too, he would have some wiggle room to reverse course if he deemed it necessary.
Now he's messed himself up if he sends troops back in, but he seems to know now he should never have taken them all out like he did.

It will be easy... "They are NOT combat troops. They are "strategic facilitators".

I have read the transcripts of every State Dept. briefing for more than two years now, and your assessment is right on the money, no matter which spokesperson is at the podium.
