Use pendrivelinux to create the bootable USB.
LINK
Then post the model of your laptop for additional instruction. Korktand's post is spot on, but getting your pc to boot from USB will be a challenge for you without details for your model pc.

Holy over-complication batman...
Download the full iso of whatever distro you want. now download poweriso, its free. insert at least a 4gb USB drive and create the bootable usb with poweriso. its one of the more simple iso programs there are so ill leave finding the "create bootable usb" button up to you. after all that, boot from the usb and follow the on screen instructions. any distro other than gentoo is just as easy to install as windows.

Linux is a UNIX based open source operating system. It was build with the Internet in mind and most Apache web servers run Linux. It is a far superior OS to windows. It is one of the best if not the best OS in the world.

No, no it wasnt. linux was designed with stabilty in mind. which is why it is in many large corporations backbone as web servers, database servers, file servers, etc etc

No. the flash drive needs to be empty. you install poweriso, tell it you want to create bootable usb, select the flash drive from the drop down then select the iso you want to use. it does the rest

One other thing, after you have a bootable USB created, you're probably going to have to go into the BIOS of the laptop and enable boot from a USB stick.
Your laptop is more than likely set to boot straight from the C drive.
Google something like "[laptop make and model number] change boot drive" and you should find info on how to do it.
It's not too hard... usually something like 1- Hold down F12 key during bootup, 2- Find "Boot Sequence" in bios, 3- Change sequence to USB 1st
Then restart with USB stick installed.

Ok, Again I want to thank you guys for your time and patience because I am very limited in my knowledge of computers. I can post here and check my emails and that's about it. I have never had any incentive to do anymore. I still can't post a pic or link anything in a thread but I get by.

Then consider it a major accomplishment if you get this figured out. Your getting close

I don't really understand why people use it over a traditional operating system. So if you use it, I just wanna know why and what makes you stick with it, or made you switch?
That shite's free, yo. That's why I used it for a while. I didn't feel like shelling out a couple hundred on software, and Ubuntu did everything I needed for free. There was a little bit of learning, but not all that hard. I eventually bought Windows so that I could run some work software at home, but Linux served my needs for a while. I still have a media server running it.

Ah yeah, I didn't realize ben was trying to fight up so many weight classes.
That said, if he manages to get it installed, Linux is just as easy to use as Windows.

How's that Linux install coming?

lol, well unless someone told him 'service network start' and 'onboot=yes' or how to set network onboot in the GUI he may be having some problems

All of our high end video processors ($12k - $115k) all Ron on custom Linux operating systems.

On what distro is this a problem? I don't think I've ever had to manually start networking.
