This will never happen. Timmay will be in goal forever. Just STAHP!

It's bittersweet for me too. I'll admit that the sabbatical made me like him a bit less. But he is American soccer and he did so much. GL in future endeavors Cakes.

He's a great soccer player and boy does he know it.

His play will be missed by everyone. His quasi-philosophizing will be missed by college hipsters.

In other news, when Taylor T isn't breaking news, he's busy looking like a douche.

I don't get this.

Every single one of us says "frick! I need a break from this shite."

Probably weekly.

But we rarely take the break, because we lack the money, or a job that will give us three months off and take us back, or we feel that our obligations are too great, or our stupid-arse Puritanical American work ethic tells us something like that isn't okay to do.

That's horseshite.

Landon said "I need a break." Kudos to him for meaning what he said, and doing something about. Kudos to Bruce Arena for "getting it" and letting him return - seemingly no questions asked.

We'd probably all be better off if we handled things this way.

I GAINED respect for Landon for his sabbatical.

All of the players on Twitter are really glad that he's retiring because they all hate him and he would have been a distraction in Brazil!

It wouldn't be a Landon Donovan thread without Djikstra and uway being complete Pep Guardiolas.

Whoa whoa whoa now. There was US soccer and US soccer fans in this country before Donovan. I like him and appreciate everything that he has done for the sport in this country. He is one of the all time greats probably the greatest BUT this is a bit much.

What the actual frick? I'm not sure what else I'm supposed to say here.

I've been highly complimentary of him in this thread, said I thought he had all the tools to succeed in Europe, and expressed sadness that he's retiring. I was never being negative. I was just explaining why I always was critical of him, and it was because I thought he had potential to play at the highest level. I don't think that's a bad thing at all.

EDIT: On a side note, this is a pretty sweet infographic on LD. LINK

Who has done more for US soccer and MLS than Donovan?

Don't try to reason with people who admit to being blinded by love for Landon.

And Hendo's post above is pointless straw man fighting.

As a pre 2002 US Soccer fan, no. No there wasn't.

It was not uncommon for the US to play in front of 15,000 fans (in a 70,000 seat stadium) with a listless crowd of 500 Sam's Army "supporters."

MLS retracted to ten teams before the 2002 season and was really struggling.

Then the US has an impressive showing in 2002, led by Landon Donovan. Landon comes back to MLS, and gives the league some since of legitimacy. By 2006, MLS and the US's trajectories had changed (which led to a goofy #4 FIFA ranking before the 2006 World Cup - remember that?) How did we get there? Gregg Berhalter? Eddie Lewis? (Yes, the team fell flat in Germany - but the enthusiasm created before and during that tournament were building blocks to today.) Momentum continues to build in MLS cities, and for US games. Fan support continues to build. We start regularly thumping Mexico. Who led us to most of those Dos a Cero games? Mastroeni? Eddie Johnson?

Then the 2010 World Cup happens. The Algeria goal, one of the greatest sporting moments in American history, and probably the biggest "pop" to get us where we are today, in terms of fan support and enthusiasm surrounding the team.

The growth of soccer, the REAL growth of soccer as we see it today has exactly coincided with the growth of Landon Donovan's career.

So, either Landon was one of the integral reasons that this growth happened - or it's just all one hell of a crazy coincidence.

But what did it make you think about his commitment to the USMNT? If the answer is nothing, that's fine, but there are other ways to see it.

Who said he hasnt? Not me. What I said is that there are a lot of people who have helped to grow the sport over the last 100 years. To say that no one is in the same "stratosphere" is just unfair IMO. I get that there are a lot of younger fans here and thats cool, I understand that dynamic. I appreciate Donovan as well but Im older so I can remember. There are owners and behind the scenes folks like Lamar Hunt who have their hands squarely in the mix helping prop up the sport and laying the groundwork for success.

Nobody. It's silly to even question that he's by far the biggest thing ever in American soccer. And he has been every bit as good as you guys say.
