re: Blood test to identify those at risk for suicide

It's genetics
If this has never been an issue for you or your family, you probably won't be interested. I am.

"In the youngest data set, they were able to identify with 96 percent accuracy whether or not a participant had attempted suicide, based on blood test results."
The SKA2 gene works to inhibit negative thoughts and control impulsive actions. When there isn't enough of it, or it is altered, the brain releases abnormal levels of the stress hormone, cortisol.
Previous studies have shown that people who try to kill themselves, or who commit suicide, have an abnormal cortisol release.
Let me guess. There's no cure, but an expensive medication you can live your whole life on?

Thank you.
Now I just struggle with the fact I will never see my little sister again. Its weird.

Instead of guessing, why don't you just post your scientific research that disproves theirs.

Keep her alive in your mind and remember the good times you had. You don't have to let those go.

You have misunderstood. I didn't say I don't believe in the existence of the gene or that the cortisol levels in the blood don't cause more stress. I was simply commenting that, more than likely, there won't be a cure, because there almost never is. I'm saying big pharma will use this as an opportunity to put people on expensive medication for the entirety of their lives. When in fact, a balanced diet and exercise would likely control the issue.

People can't accept that maybe they had a mental illness, maybe they were looking for attention, or just maybe they were batshit crazy..!!
Could you make it anymore obvious that the point of the blood test went over your head?

I thought he made a very valid and well thought out point. I too get angry at medical research so I see where he's coming from..!!

He isn't mad at medical research as much as he just wants to flat out blame those who commit suicide and doesn't think there are possibly other underlying factors. Just completely closed minded.

Not true for everyone.
And a well balanced diet does not cure mental illness

So sorry for your loss. That is terrible. My brother in laws older brother committed suicide 10 years ago and it was just awful
Posted on 8/2/14 at 8:36 am to HoustonChick86
Oh yes, definitely not everyone but it is the majority.
And no, there is no cure for mental illness but there are things that help. Diet and exercise does help for some.

Tldr just read the last two sentences.
By this statement I assumed you didn't have any facts to back up your argument. I apologize of I misunderstood.
Live your whole life on.
You wouldn't hate the companies that produce insulin. Until they have a cure, they are at least getting people an option.
Hopefully someone smarter than me can comment on what I'm saying, because I'm really ignorant on the subject of the science and medication behind it. And I'm sure it shows. If diet and exercise is an alternative, then I would be in favor of doctors working with patients in this direction the same way they would with heart disease. It just rubed me the wrong way to see people rolling their eyes in a thread that people are posting in who are struggling with the issue. You can throw away everything I posted before that last sentence.

Just FYI, it is more profitable to create a medication you have to continue taking in order to live than making a cure. Pharmaceutical companies are all about profit.
Scruffy doesn't see this as some kind of amazing discovery, nor does he expect this "test" to become mainstream, if it is ever created.
There really is no application for it.

Did you read the article?
And yes, there are things that help. Medicine. When I didn't take mine I ended up in the hospital on suicide watch. I diet and excerise.

Pharmaceutical companies exist because there's big money in it. And those companies have share holders who want them to stay in business. I don't have a solution to that problem, but I would rather live in a time when they exist.
At first glance I don't expect this to become main stream either, but it could offer some insight as to one of the things going on with the individual.
Again I'm not arguing for it or against it. And probably went overboard.

Insurance companies love tests that can perceivably lower their risks

There is actually a pill I have been prescribed twice that fixed me right up each time within a couple of months. The psychologist had the doc prescribe it and then after a couple more visits said I didn't need to come back. It happened about 5 years apart. I had suffered repeatedly periodically before that. My mind FELT different and it wasn't psychosomatic either.
Somebody like that who will help you out without dragging it out forever is golden. People like that are out there. Unfortunately, so are those who will string you along. Maybe I am just lucky and have something really simple to fix.
