Don't those shed a lot to keep inside? I know you can't have a pug outside in South Louisiana (they overheat too easily in the summer and freeze in the winter).

Standard dachshund. Shorthair. Funniest, most entertaining dog on earth. Tremendous personalities and smart. But can be obstinate and will bite strangers. Very protective.

That's probably what I'll end up getting, that or a lab/beagle mix that stays outside.

if you are getting something that doesn't shed, is it really necessary to keep it outside?
or are you talking specifically on the beagle mix? does it shed?

I'll be getting one next I think. My current lab doesn't really hunt much anyway so I think dealing with the fur will be much much much easier with the doodle

What I was saying is if it sheds, it has to be outside all of the time. If it doesn't shed, it might get to spend some time inside.

If I go the tiny indoor dog route, what's the board's opinion on Westie's? Are they as annoying as Yorkie's or Chihuahua's?

I may have one, but possibly neither

You must have missed my post.
They are great dogs. Inside dogs or outside dogs. They are listed as hypo-allergenic as well.
I've got a Cairn, that are close cousins to the Westie and they are really cool dogs too.

I might go that direction. I'll put those on the list of dogs to look for:
Westies
Caerns
Lab mixes (for outside, my SO loves labs)
poodle mixes
Shepherd mixes

Westie's are awesome. We had one for 2 years and it was the best dog we've ever had. We then had our 1st child and he snapped at her when she was 2 weeks old. We found a good home for him. Still miss that dog but I could't live with myself if we would have kept him and he would have hurt my little girl.

A girl I know just got a brussels griffon. Awesome dog. So much personality.

Cairns and Westies are small to medium dogs, and they are pretty thick-boned. That's one of the reasons I got mine. I didn't want a dog that the kids would inadvertently hurt because it was brittle or feeble. As I stated in other post, my buddys got a Westie that's a snake killer. The dog was bitten by a snake when it was younger, and now it hates them.
