It's a case of it being a three-way race and the candidate everyone expected to win completely flopping.


The race was between Ventura, Norm Coleman (R), and "Skip" Humphrey (D), son of legendary Minnesota politician Hubert H. Humphrey.

Polling going into the election had Humphrey in 1st (35%), Coleman in 2nd (34%), and Ventura in 3rd (21%). The actual results flopped Ventura into 1st (37%) and Humphrey into 3rd( 28%), as apparently a lot of Democrat voters either didn't turn out for Humphrey or went Ventura instead.


There was no requirement for Ventura to win with 50% + 1 vote, so he took office with only a 37% plurality of votes.

Funny, coming from the state that elected Edwin Edwards and Ray Nagin into office and had been named the "most corrupt state".
