What is the best way to learn to play poker? I need a new hobby.

I'd suggest reading, but if you came to the OT first, I am going to guess that suggestion would not go very far.

To actually play it and do some reading
Hold'em Tournament Play:
Harrington on Hold'em Vol 1
Harrington on Hold'em Vol 2
If you're in the mood: Harrington on Hold'em Vol 3

Cash Games:
Hold'em Poker: David Slansky
Hold'em Poker: For Advanced Players

If you like to play small limit games at the local casino I suggest this:
Small Stakes Hold'em

I advise you to read everything by David Slansky and almost anything published by 2+2.

STAY AWAY FROM PHIL HELMUTH BOOKS.

Are you looking at tournament play or cash games?

BTW, online poker is dead and playing it will just give you bad habits because when the money isn't real then the players act like idiots.

Sit at Harrah's with a friend who will show you the ropes. The Pit Bosses usually don't mind.

That's an expensive hobby. Trust me. Take up golf or owning race horses instead.

Play low enough stakes that you won't be pissed about losing money, but definitely don't play free. Nobody gives a shite when the money is fake.

It'll take awhile to get really good. I'd suggest watching videos at deucescracked.com and/or reading Will Tipton's Heads Up books. Will's book are pretty math oriented/advanced so they may be too much at first.

PokerStars is good for learning the basics, betting structures, etc, and it's free, but like others have said, when it's not real money, people play like complete fricking retards. Strategy wise, go on YouTube and look up WSOP Academy. Lots of good tips from those videos.

I have a buddy who was ranked in the top 500 in the world. Went to Vegas and played all of the time too. Told me he lost about $35k when the SHTF with the online poker deal. fricker is at Harrah's damn near every night now, and that's how he makes a living while putting himself through school

Reading a few books taught me basic hand value and betting strategies, but in reality you need to just play and get experience. Trick is, it has to be meaningful play. Learning online with play money is just going to cause you to learn to play too loose. Jumping into what you can't afford is going to make you learn to play too tight. You need to develop your own style. Any low-stakes home games or anything like that in your area?
