How many are there..?

Crescent City Connection... two spans, one is already a toll though, right?
Huey P Long in NOLA
Gramercy Bridge
Sunshine Bridge
Huey P Long Bridge (BR)
Audubon Bridge
Natchez Bridge... also two spans

Doesn't include:
Luling Bridge, but that's part of I-310
Horace Wilkinson Bridge (I-10)
Vicksburg Bridge (I-20)
Old Vicksburg Bridge (rail only now)

Several of those also carry rail lines, they have to contribute to maintenance as well, I'm sure.

Good question. I'll have to ask today when I see my friends. Also find out about the whole weights and measures.

Don't railroad companies maintain their own tracks though? Or is that an outdated thing?

I know that one they ranted for a while about the State Police taking 25 million a year and it pissed them off. Something about they take DOTD's permit money that is supposed to go towards the facilities and employees.

May have something to do with state police taking the permit money and also keeping the fine money for non-compliance.

And should still have one.

That's why it's coming under disrepair. Not enough funds to keep it nice.

even if they had the funds they would earmark it for other projects. The only reason that bridge is being repaired now is because of the huge plant expansion on the west bank.

Yeah. Probably easy to maintain one bridge and keep it nice.

Sunshine used to be very nice. Should have kept the tolls.

It doesn't because the toll booths were in a VERY dangerous spot and caused lots of crashes. They need to put the toll booths in a different spot so 18-wheelers aren't crashing into people again.

They had one when I was little and stopped...started the toll again and stopped again (I think). I heard they took the tolls out because someone/or a few people were killed running into the booths that weren't even collecting money.

technically the bridge over the Mississippi in NOLA is Interstate-910

don't believe me? google it.

State for some reason didn't want to accept the federal designation.

quote:

U.S. Highway 90 Business (officially U.S. Highway 90-Z[4]) is a business route of U.S. Highway 90 in and near New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. Unlike a standard business route, it is built to higher standards than the segment of U.S. 90 that it parallels, with over half built to freeway standards and designated (but not signed as) Interstate 910.

Wouldn't be able to. All monies collected would go towards the bridge and the bridge only. The bridge is it's own entity with it's own workforce.

This is assuming that the law is passed with this caveat in it.

That was the way the CCC law was written that got voted down. Course, the main reason for that was because DOTD was ordered to not tell anyone what the tolls would be used for because a Jindal lackey was against the toll. So people never knew the purpose of instituting the tolls.

You seem to know a lot about this stuff so I am curious...the toll in most cases is to pay for the cost of constructing the bridge right? Or when it was deemed a toll bridge it was to pay for the bridge and once the money had been collected to cover the cost the tolls stop. Why wouldn't our tax dollars that are meant to maintain our roads cover future bridge maintenance?

Our tax dollars do cover the future maintenance. It's not enough.

Trying to maintain those bridges is expensive. And there's no reason for it. They can generate their own revenue.

The tolls are not designed to cover the cost of the bridge only, but also to maintain. The only reason the tolls were ended or taken away is because some politicians wanted to curry favor in their district. The excuse of "People were running into toll booths" is just that: an excuse.

But I believe in some instances the tolls weren't even collecting anymore

it's a lot easier to just raise taxes than to institute tolls
