the field is the width from the sidewalk to our houses, with two trees on one end and a driveway cutting across the middle
space between the second tree and the house is one goal, while the other goal is two baseball bats laid down on my front yard
i played in a 1 vs. 2 and then later 1 vs. 3 against three kids aged 8-10. i was quicker and far more clinical with better ball skills, but the stamina was lacking and it was hot
one of the kids asked if i watched the FIFA world cup. i said "as much as I could" and asked me who won. he then asked me "How did Arsenal do?"
it got intense when i said next goal wins. i couldn't put away my chances and the heat did me in. i told them "there's a reason they play soccer during the winter"
but these were my next door neighbor kids, nothing ethnic at all about them. it was their idea to play soccer and i think they'd do so again, it was fun
i always teach them something in every sport we play... i should have taught them how to convert a 2 vs 1 or a one-timer... i mean duh, the game was 2 or 3 vs 1 since i was bigger and older

this game was yesterday btw
it got me to thinking about a possible commercial for US Soccer... show diverse groups of kids getting ready to play, with different objects (bikes, backpacks, trees, etc.) being the goals. then at the end show the empty goal in a packed world cup stadium with the tagline "What's your goal?"
i think it would send the message of we need kids to play soccer unsupervised in the sandlots to get to the next level as a soccer nation. we need them to play pickup games like they do with hoops and not play in too structured environments.

go bring some soccer balls to Hollygrove and you might want to wear a bulletproof vest just in case.

Try these games with them, these are what we used to play as kids. Perfect for when you've too few numbers for a proper game (4 a side is a bare minimum I reckon)
LINK
We used to play slightly different where we'd mark out a half way line, and whenever a player, or team, took possession of the ball they'd have to move it back to the halfway line before they were able to score. Made it more of a challenge.
LINK /
Only difference to that we played was any shot that missed and actually went out meant the offender went in goal.
Amazingly fun and suprisingly good competition. Don't know if you play these sort of mini games over there. We still play headers and volleys now! Best game ever.
