What is the OB's opinion of eels?

I had never given them much thought, but just finished a documentary on them. Very interesting creatures and I never realized that the population was under such heavy pressure. Some species are critically endangered. Scientists know almost nothing about large portions of their existence.
They do travel to the sea to breed, however we know very little about why, how, or what happens on this trip.
In New Zealand the Brits told everyone the native eels were harming the alien / introduced trout. Turns out the eels predation led to bigger fish.
I used to kill them if I happened to catch any (out of ignorance) but I think I will put them back in the water if I happen to catch any more.

That is part of the problem, and it is being driven by demand in Asia.
I mean, can any fishery survive millions and millions of members being removed year after year?

After a hurricane, go ride on flooded areas after they dry. They are everywhere
They make good catfish bait cut up on a trot line

I don't like it on my sushi rolls

Used to catch them all the time in my crawfish traps when I was younger. I turned them into free crawfish bait.
Every now and then I used to catch one during regular ole fishing. I would throw them back though.

I caught one fishing once in a pond on river road. I was gonna throw it away, but some African Americans asked if they could have it. They said they taste better than fried catfish.

Smoked eel tastes good, the first time I'd had it was in Amsterdam. Them fricky Dutch love them, with there French Fries with mayonnaise.
