I've been resisting starting to play for many reasons. But now I think I'm at a point where I have the time to play a good bit. Went play this week on vacation with my dad, brother & bil. This was only my 5th round ever & 1st in 2 years. Broke 100 & actually managed to par 17 & 18. Think that good finish hooked me.
Soooooo... What now? I wanna learn & improve. I'd like to take lessons/hire a pro. Any recommendations? Should I just go to the range & start wacking away? Videos? Help! &TIA!

And by "broke 100", I mean 98, lol. Had those 2 pars, a bogey, and a couple doubles. The rest were triple or more, lol. I did lay into a drive that went over 300.....to the right

All about practicing. Get a lesson or two to learn basics

Go putt. It's free and it's what costs most people who are just starting out to play the most strokes on the course. The more you chip and putt the better your touch will be around the greens and the better you will score. Listen to all the other advice you get as well. Most pros know what they are talking about and should help your game tremendously.

Go play City Park a few times a week, it's $6 to walk it so its cheap and never really crowded so many times I can hit a few shots.

I found doing that helped me better than just going to range and hacking away.

I played for 40 years before I had to give it up because of lower back issues.

As many others have stated, get lessons. Learn it the right way at the beginning.

Spend 75% of the practice time available on chipping and putting. A good short game will lower your scores faster than anything else.

The problem with golf is that practice makes permanent. If you are going to practice, listen to the advice in here. Don't just go hit balls because you will ingrain bad swing habits and make those feel natural to you. This will make fixing and changing those habits much more difficult in the long run. Practice from 30 yards in. If you can consistently chip and pitch to within one-put range you will be miles ahead. Hitting fairways and greens is important too. But let's face it, you are going to miss plenty of greens. And mis-hitting short shots is the most frustrating thing in golf.

I've never gotten why people do this for a recreational sport. It's like going out and hiring private basketball coach because your shot has been off your last few pick up games. It just seems dumb....but hey whatever

I strongly recommend that you avoid practice and golf lessons. If you are never going to be a pro it's a waste of time and money. You can see instruction videos on line for free. If you spend 10 bucks on a one year subscription to Golf Magazine they will keep sending it to you for 20 years for free because they make their money on ads.

Just go out and play. I was also a baseball player and told early that my golf swing was too flat. Now, I learned that the flat swing is in with the professionals.

Who cares? Just go out and have fun.

Really the only thing someone could tell you this early on in your learning experience us practice, practice, then practice some more concentrating on putting/short game and don't get frustrated. Too many people hit at the range for 2 hours and spend a whole hour of that hitting the driver
