David Stern is a genius. Most commisioners after the Ewing envelope controversy, would strive for full transparency. Instead he intentionally made every draft and lottery fishy since then. It doesn't look as bad

However, a team that fights and scraps and barely misses the playoffs, while commendable, doesn't deserve the number 1 pick either.
Seriously adding Wiggins to a 49 win teams seems like a poor idea. Now if the draft was actually seeded by initially record then it would work much better.

I proposed this many years ago.
The bottom 4 teams are placed in one group.
Then the next 4 are placed in another group, etc. etc. until all the playoff teams are reached then you draft in order of record
A 9th place team has no business of winning a top 4 pick.

no no no no no
The grouping would make tanking even worse. Every team in the bottom 5-8 starts tanking to get to 1-4. Every team in 9-14 tanks to get to the 5-8. The 1-4 teams then have to tank to stay in 1-4.

i love it. i love any idea that doesnt reward tanking. in this system, theres no difference between being the worst 5 teams. theres no point in trying to be the worst team in the league, b/c it doesnt guarantee you anything.

Why don't they do it like football? Worst gets first, second worst gets second and so on. You know, where it makes sense. Instead of this ping pong ball nonsense.

I'd rather have a few dreadful teams I'm not watching much of anyways tank down the stretch. I get that they're also trying to stop the cycle of mediocrity, but mediocre teams should work internally and through free agency to become contenders. Awarding them with #1 picks would frick up league balance, and it's not worth it in my opinion. Bad teams will stay bad even longer, mediocre teams will receive bailouts as if they were bad teams.

Because tanking would be even worse.

quote:the best non playoffs team, with the worst odds to win the #1 pick would go from .5% to 2%. its hardly enough to act like it would keep the poor bad teams bad and the almost-there teams in furs. the truth is most bad teams are bad b/c they are ran poorly, not b/c of some lucky, biased lottery system.

The Sixers tanked so disgracefully that they killed the system for good. Incredible.
Trading away present assets for future assets like Philly did is not taking. Tanking is what Golden State did when they tried to keep the pick they had traded to Utah a few years ago. Tanking is a bad Charlotte team and a bad New Orleans team sitting "injured" starters to win the Anthony Davis sweepstakes.

To people who will always choose to believe it's rigged. Remember two months ago when the draft was definitely going to be rigged for the Lakers or Celtics?

Yep
"Embiid/Wiggins to the Lakers/Celtics to save their franchises"

To be fair the #1 pick went to a team that just so happen to end up landing LeBron and which created a great PR moment for the NBA

Pretty much any idea they could come up with would be better than that "30 yr wheel bullshite." Worst idea ever.
This is fine, i guess.

Yeah, that's a terrible idea. Honestly, tanking is overstated. Even if teams do tank, they often miss the #1 pick. That's the point of the lottery. It hedges against tanking. You can't just say "screw the have nots," though. They need to be careful not to go too far with their tweaks.

So Lebron told the league in advance? Or the league thought there was no chance he'd return to Miami, even though they seemed poised for their 3rd straight title at the time of the lottery?

By putting a strong young core around the superstar LeBron. Duh.
That operates under the assumption that it was a 'done deal' that Lebron was returning to Cleveland back when Kyrie Irving was drafted. I personally don't believe this. Who could guess that that would happen? Gilbert and LBJ probably hated each other. Maybe LBJ always had it in the back of mind that he wanted to return, but when? Nobody knew. What if Miami won the championship? The whole thing would backfire.
Besides, isn't the NBA a better and more interesting product when LBJ is the villain? Just imagine if he would have went to LAL. Its a nice story for Cleveland, but I don't think a lot of people outside NE Ohio are rooting for LBJ to bring one home to Cleveland.
