Why are people scared of Clowns when a clown exist to make us laugh?

Same reason why a small child singing can be scary. Taking something perceived to be safe and making it even slightly haunting can really mess with people head.

Because people are stupid sheep.
Someone says clowns are scary, now it's cool to say all clowns are scary.
Same with bill Murray. Someone (his agent) got his name in the entertainment news cycle as being cool and now everyone thinks he's cool as shite.

I heard a joke once: Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life is harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world. Doctor says, "Treatment is simple. clowns don't bother me.
I believe people who are afraid of clowns are actually expressing hatred of their childhood via a traditional 'childhood' figure/stereotype/icon.
Basically people who are truly afraid of clowns, not just "i think they are creepy", have some serious childhood issues.
