New LSU big man Elbert Robinson looks to reshape his body

He ballooned to the 330-pound range heading into his senior high school season, so when Robinson officially enrolled in June, the No. 1 item on his to-do list was a no-brainer.
"I had to get rid of a lot of that baby fat," he said last week during a media session to introduce the four new LSU players, along with transfer Keith Hornsby and sophomore Brian Bridgewater, who sat out last season as he waited on the NCAA Clearinghouse.
"I'm down to 288 now and I want to be around 275-80 when the season gets here. I want to be more explosive and be able to get up and down the floor better than I ever have before."

Though Robinson was effective at the Texas Class 5A level with 11.7 points, 10.9 rebounds and 4.1 blocked shots a game and was tabbed third-team All-City by the Dallas Morning News, he labored at times because he had ballooned to near 330 pounds.

Glad to hear he is shedding the pounds. 7'-1", 275 pounds could be potential beast mode.
Is this guy one of our biggest wildcards heading into the new season?
I'm a bit concerned that he was 7'-1" in HIGH SCHOOL and only averaged 12 points per game, regardless of how overweight he was his senior year. I've seen some highlights and it looks like he has decent coordination and footwork for a big man.

Yeah, I think his ranking is justified by his really high ceiling.
When Ohio State is trying to land him, he certainly has NBA talent. It's also encouraging to hear from so many angles that he's had a great work ethic this past year

Good article, I'd love to have him step in and start.
Not for his offense nut for his size, defense, and rebounding.

I think so. If he slims down a bit more, he should be able to handle 13-20 minutes a game easily. He could give us 6 points, 4 rebounds, and a block pretty consistently as a freshman IMO. The good news is that he doesn't have much pressure on him this season. He has time to ease into the college game.

I imagine he manhandles Malone on the boards at practice.

his work ethic has been off the charts.
dont remember the exact quote but someone asked him his goals as a player and he said something to the effect of "block as many shots and grab as many rebounds as i can"
exactly what you want to hear

Yeah, he's not expected to come in and be the star, but he does have some expectations. Is it unreasonable to expect him to become a 10/5/1.5(blocks) guy by the end of SEC play? We need a 5. Mickey needs to be able to come off the block and not stay down there 24/7.

I'd hope for a little more than that if he ends up being our starting center.

I don't think it's unreasonable. I think he'll be that guy towards the end of the season. He's raw though. For the majority of the season, I'm not sure he'll be able to give Mickey much relief down low.

I share your concerns. I've heard comments from him that he wants to be a defensive force and that to be his niche.
But unless he sheds even more of that baby fat I can see teams exploiting him on ball screens. I guess we can zone when he's in there.
But given the fact that some expected more than we got from Odo and the Aussie last year, I'm going to temper my expectations and give him time to develop.

Slow down guys, I saw the kid play a few times last year and he was no where close to ready for the college game. He has some skills, but he needs to get a lot stronger and much more physical.

Oh no, I'm right there with you.

Odo, Malone, and Robinson are gonna hafta play that true center position by committee, I think. If that doesn't work well, we may play with no real Center.

I think we could create some matchup problems playing with no real center that could trump what we might lose with a true post presence.
Martin stared to come on late last year as a finisher on the break and Mickey has the athleticism to play that role too.

Let's see how the big men progress, but at worst it's 15 fouls down low to give.
