I'm serious LaPlace, I'd really like to know what your opinion is as to why.

So, you think you're on to something nobody else has bought into? You're blazing new territory? Going it alone huh? Man, if they would just listen.

Good marketing.
You have to vote for my guy or else the other guy will ruin the country.
Keeps them both in power.

I think I first noticed it during the Clinton Presidency, and then it has just gotten worse.

OP, this has been a rigged game for a long time. As RTS said...the onslaught of "in your face" media (intarwebs and cable) have exacerbated to issue. Most of us lie somewhere in the middle but are too stupid to pull away from the party first mentality.

I agree that is certainly part of it. Maybe my question should be why people buy into that. I mean you see it all the time on this board. People lumped together in some sort of generalization then followed by vitriol.

The media. On both sides.

The reason politics are so polarized is because everyone lumps together into groups instead of thinking as independent people.
People have values that form their politics.
Abortion... Polarizing because it's a moral issue. I don't need a politician to tell me where to stand on that. It's polarizing to me because of my belief system, a system that doesn't require your approval or validation to believe and stand where I stand.
Limited government... An principle formed by our founding fathers who intended to limit the power and scope of government in the lives of Americans so we wouldn't return to our authoritarian vomit we rebelled against. I buy into it, because I'm an American. It's polarizing when government oversteps their bounds in my life to dictate my 1st or 2nd amendment rights, and in bankrupting this country with 16 TRILLION dollars in debt...
It's not the parties. It's the agenda that is destroying this country that are polarizing.

"It" relies on a gullible and/or receptive mindset. A fact-seeking electorate would end the BS. Most of our populace is unfortunately more interested in a good story, than sorting out facts.

Because the half that works is tired of giving the half that doesn't work their half*
*And the politicians are the "polarizers" based on whose half they claim to represent while not representing the whole.

I dig in a little more every time Obama, Pelosi, Reid, and other leftists blame every issue on the wealthy, while being obscenely wealthy, (through public service jobs no less) and the right.
It disgusts me to see women fall for their emotional pandering that has little if any foundation in reality. It is insulting to me and to other women who spend any time thinking about current events.
I'm sick to death of hearing about income inequality and pay gaps. I'm sick of hearing about white privilege and cis gender bull shite.
I'm tired of worrying about how much our health insurance will cost, how much groceries will cost, how much gas,and electricity will cost. I worry for my kids and my parents.
I think we pay enough in taxes and feel as though I might come unhinged the next time I hear that people who have been "so fortunate" should be willing to "give back". We give and give and give but it will never be enough. On top of that I worry about how our political affiliation may impact our future.
I'm just tired of feeling stressed the hell out. Tired of lib-prog finger pointing at me and people like me.

Do you not see the everyday conspiracy-esque shitshow that is this board and the yearly Obama bitchfest that it has become? It's sad, La Place Mike. Real sad.

Okay, I don't disagree with that. Many pols feed the polarization. But does that explain why we see it carried out in the microcosm of this board?
