so I am guessing you didn't play Sticky MRE when you were in the navy. I am sure it got lonely out there on the ships.

But just curious: how many coroners reports list "second hand smoke" as cause of death?
Probably about as many as report "first hand smoke" as COD.

Okay, what about all the other stuff though?

Still in the Navy. My first two years were on a ship, and I spent 14 months underway. Let's just say I started giving my socks girls' names.

For all the people who believe there is a near consensus on SHS, what are your views on the near consensus when it comes to climate change?

Dude. Non-smokers don't want to share in your filthy, low-class habit. Deal with it. I have enough bad habits without having to shoulder yours.
Cheers.

Love it when people randomly bring up global warming/climate change in threads about science/medicine that are totally unrelated. Makes it clear you have very little understanding and knowledge in the actual subject at hand.

I like libertarian ideals, i think we should strive for more freedom. But living in a world with no rules would be fricking annoying.
There it is.
And Lulz at you thinking a libertarian world would have no rules. No, it just would have a hell of a lot less rules than what we have now.
You know, simples rules like don't steal, don't hurt people, don't force anyone to do something they don't want to do, and don't slander/defraud people.

I don't know if "mature" is the word I'd choose. Humanity's been humaning for a while now. Humanity is not wise enough. Honest enough. Good enough. Prudent enough. Considerate enough. All of those work.

1. That's fricking rich
2. No one is sharing or has ever forced you to share their habit with them. Perhaps your parents, but that's about it.
3. How repugnant you find something has no bearing on the topic at hand.

You seem awfully sensitive about your tobaki. Maybe your parents should have taught you better.
And my revulsion at the habit isn't at issue. You can smoke your arse off in your Honda, at your pad, at your buddies' homes. It's no matter to me. You just shouldn't force it upon the general public. It's bad enough that I have to visually take in all of your tattoos and whatnot.
I appreciate your understanding.

I think you didn't get the jist of that. Being a former squid I didn't feel the need to clarify...officer/enlisted: no one is sitting around sipping brandy. If you're not friends with at least one low life, you're not navying it right. I bet you fit in nicely when you tell everyone how tacky they are.

the problem is in the application of those rules. Don't hurt people for instance, this could easily fall under that rule.
btw, I know libertarians that really would like anarchy which would be no rules.

I begged, pleaded, cajoled, plied, and bribed my sailors with all I had to get them to quit smoking. Two did for about four months. It didn't take. I never shied away from complaining about smokers in a general sense, but I would never personally insult a subordinate like that.
I would like to see the Navy go smoke-free on ships, but I suppose mutiny is a real possibility.
ETA: And in case you didn't pick it up, there is a bit of levity in all of this. I know smokers whom I respect and admire, just as they may or may not know a heavy-drinking alleged overseas whoremonger.

See how well the dipping ban is working. There is no way you'll separate it from military life, for young people, 10 months on a floating prison can be tough, tobacco is an enormous coping mechanism

Why? They have designated pits and despite the waste of time I would argue that tobacco improves efficiency on ships
14 hour days. 7 day work weeks. No privacy. Limited access to email/internet. Spades only gets you so far.
If you really want to entice them and you swing it, I would suggest relaxing hair and facial hair regs for non smoking sailors. Go on the honor code system and make an occasional trip to the smoke pit
BTW I haven't smoked in a month, and the boat is where I first came to rely on it. I've never gone more than a day. I feel like I'm in the clear. Somehow I've lost weight. All thanks to bubbilicious

The ease with which the smoking troll thread is executed continues to impress me.
