Heading down to the Grandest of all Isle's in 3 weeks. Whats the chances we catch a few crabs at the beach?
I'm sure we could catch some at Artie's if not

Shouldn't be too many people in the water due to the sargasm grass washing up and the threat of vibrio vulnificus infection I would imagine you will catch a few crabs though.

We have been in Grand Isle since Monday. There isn't a whole lot of crabs on the beaches right now but that could change with the Full moon coming up this weekend.
We put out 2 crab traps yesterday morning and after running them 3 times we have about 4 dozen. So there are some. Not sure how good a line would catch. I usually run a line when the crabs are plentiful.

Damn that isn't bad. I put out 10 traps in bayou Petit Caillou this past weekend and let them sit for 30 hours and only caught 2-1/2 dozen. Thankfully we caught another couple dozen in the trawl and had about 15 lbs of shrimp to go with them. If not for that it would have been a bust.

Sounds like you'll be there during tarpon.
A lot better chances at catching a buzz.

I have asked before and I still don't understand.
How do you run/set a trot line for crabs?

Two poles and some bait drops along the main line
Walk back and forth down the line with a net to catch them on the bait as you slowly lift each bait line

Two PVC lines in the surf, run nylon cord between and weigh down the middle. Bait between the weights with necks, etc. You walk the line with a net and dip the crabs that are hanging on the bait. Normally about waist deep water, running parallel to the shore...

May be doing this on Saturday, too. Apparently I need to bring beer

The fishing has been sporadic.
The tide has been high around 7:30 and 8:00 in the morning. Making for a slack tide very early. The tide hasnt been turning around and really moving out until after 10:00 to 11:00. Which is when we usually head back in for lunch and a nap. When I have found fish there have been a bunch of small ones in front of Elmer's with bigger fish found at the rock piles in front of the state park.
Despite the west wind the water clarity has been decent and the surf has not been too rough.
ETA: I believe the tide will be shifting each day so that high tide will be closer to noon which will be better for fishing in the morning.

thanks guys. I was trying to envision a trot line that somehow kept the crabs on. The netting them makes more sense.
