Thanks for straightening me out, JGIR.

I love the knowledge in this thread, which is the best OT thread I have read or been a part of.

Let's go back to something a little older.
What is the Roman name for this formation?
Also, what is the name for the armor worn by the centurion on the right? Ignore the fact that his sword is worn on the right.

I question the authenticity of this photo

I think you may be on to something

Turtle, or "testudo" if I remember it correctly.
I have no clue about the armor.

I agree. Color photography had not been invented yet.

Correct on testudo. The armor is now known as lorica segmentata. Its use was principally during the Principate and the first three centuries of the Empire.

The bottom B 17 is "carrying" the other B-17 home.

Yes it is, but can you provide a little more?

Here is one for Darth: What is it/time period/whose.

Judging from the USA on the side...American tank post-WWI, pre-WWII, since I don't remember anything like that once WWII started.

Correct so far, sir. Will leave it up to try to stump our resident track expert, Darth.

Early generation M3 Stuart?
It resembles a M3 hull but the back isn't right and it has what I assume are 2 MGs instead of the Stuart's 37mm cannon.
You can bet Darth will nail it.

I don't think so. This came about in the early 1930's and the Stuart entered service (I believe) in the early '40s. Darth will know more, though.

Yeah, I don't know. I'm basing that guess on hull appearance. It has enough of the 'look' of the M2/M3/M5 line to make me think it is in that family but the armament alone shows it predates them by a good bit.

Hoping that it does the same to Darth. BTW, where is he?
