Wow, I am sorry to hear that. I am glad you and your siblings got to see him before he died, though.

I have a great relationship with my parents but my wife has not talked to her mom in over 8+ years.
6 years ago they were driving from Vegas to El Paso/Juarez (Yes they are messicans), MIL was driving and the tire blew out, the grandmother was flown from the van and van rolled over on her (no seatbelt) and of course died on impact.
Wife's mother was a normal hardworking, family oriented lady, after that she put the blame on herself for everything and got hooked on pain pills.
Wife and I did everything we could to help including giving more money than we should (ended up going to more pills in the long run). We finally said screw it and stopped. Basically told her keep it up and you won't see your daughter. I think my wife is at peace with it, although I can tell it hurts her sometimes.
She will call me everyonce in a while and leave a message and she sounds so out of it. Sucks seeing how pills can ruin someone.

I lost a cousin nearly two years ago to a pill addiction. He was like a brother to me. I had no idea he was hooked in anything. He was taking many valiums and percasets (spelling?) each day, especially at night. His heart stopped in his sleep.
He was also 33 (same as my mother)and had two small kids (same...). I hate to think about it.

i went 3-4 years with seeing my father only once. I really wish I had kept him out of my life, he is a pretty toxic person. I talked to him but just didn't see him. he got into an argument with my wife over something very petty (his wife bought my wife a trinket) and said some pretty mean things
I just forgot about how horrible he was, and visited him on a trip to see my mother. And now I am pretty much stuck seeing him again.
I have wanted to go no contact but I fear for my sister if that happens. She is low contact, and I am also. But i feel like he will take it out on her if I bolt from his life. And she refuses to do so (kids).

Biological father left us when I was seven. I have seen him twice since then (40 years). Once, he showed up unexpectedly at my high school graduation. Second time, he came by my house not long after the birth of my son (15 years ago). Both times were very uncomfortable for both of us, and I think he sensed this and stays away now. Hard to call a stranger Dad. I do know that he's been married at least four times and I have half-siblings that I've never met in at least three other states.
Stepfather adopted my brother and I when I was 11. He messed around on my mom when I was 16 and we left, they divorced. I haven't seen him since. At all.
Closest thing I had to a father was my grandfather, but he died of cancer in his mid-50's, also when I was 11. I still use my stepfather's last name, though I don't really know why other than I'm 47 now and don't really have a good reason to change it.

...long time (10-15+ years)?
My mom died just before I turned 6, so I really have no memories of her. That was never really an issue for me until I had kids, and I realized that so much of what I was enjoying of them, she must have enjoyed with me...and I can;t remember any of it. Plus, if something were to have happened to me, my boys who I adore and who adore me would likely have had just as few memories of me as I had of my mom. It's why, I'm sure, I've set my work up in such a was so as to spend as much time with time as I can.
My Dad died 12 years ago but we had a great relationship.
I'm 44. I'm guessing quite a few older posters will fit this pattern mostly due to age.

Damn, tell us how you really feel.
I hope all is well with you, though.
