Damn baw...that is like putting a picture up of a dead body with no head and asking for an identity

However I can say without a shadow of a doubt that he is a dead snake.

How did your dog turn out?....that is one of my major fears with my dumb arse mutt is that he will run afoul of some pissed off snake and get bit.

Man it's really hard to tell since Cotton Mouths and DB Water Snakes look so similar. But I'd say 60/40 Cotton Mouth vs DBWS.

Cotton Mouth... body more triangular than round is a sign of venomous snake. the markings are lighter than most cotton mouths, but nonetheless are cotton mouth markings.

Snake ID

This might help. The pictures don't help a bunch but there are descriptions and other info.

I've had a shitload of dogs get bit by a shitload of snakes and have never had one die from it. Have spent zero dollars on their vet care during the process. My pow pow told a long time ago that dogs are built to withstand snake bites. So far he has been correct

This. I've had 4 dogs I can remember that were bitten by moccasins, usually in the face because they were trying to smell them. One of my black labs was bitten in the face on 5 different occasions, and he never went to the vet. The last couple of bites hardly even made him swell anymore

I left him at the Animal hospital last for observation and so they could run an IV. They shot him up with steroids, antibiotics, pain killers and antihistamine. Picked him up this morning, foot and leg still swollen, and brought him straight to our regular vet. They are keeping him there today and plan on releasing him tomorrow morning with a chewable antibiotic. Our vet told me this morning that she was 90% sure he was in the clear, and is more concerned with an infection at the bite site than she is the effects of the venom.

I have to say, I was a little annoyed with the vet last night at the hospital. At first he gave me a whole list of stuff that we needed to do, without even explaining what any of it really was. I asked him what my other options were and he told me that my only "option" was that we could opt for or against the antivenom. Everything else was non-negotiable. He was very rude and acted like I was a terrible person for wanting to know if there was a way we could help my dog for less than $1500. Anyway, the vet tech ended up helping me figure out a plan that ended up costing $400. That included the overnight stay, drugs, and fluid. Basically he was wanting me to do about $300 worth of blood panels and coagulation test. My vet this morning said I did the right thing...

Thanks for all your help, I really do appreciate it.

Those emergency Animal hospitals are the worst. They play on your emotions and get you to spend money on treatments that aren't necessary. Been there done that. When we were in a similar situation we found out later there were other much less and expensive and more effective options available.

That is exactly how I felt...like he was trying to play me.

But we are happy that he is doing better and I'm especially glad I didn't have to explain to my kids that their dog died this morning.

I've never known any of my friends that had to use Sherwood animal hospital that thought they were friendly/did a good job/didnt feel like they were getting reamed.

I had to take my chihuahua there back in 2009 and left without a dog and pissed off at the staff/vet there just for not being very friendly with me at all.. then there was the bill.

I guess after surviving 2-3 bites the dog built up a pretty good immunity.

How is it you were able to determine what was and wasn't necessary?

It's the job of the veterinarian to recommend the best possible treatment plan. Yes, that often means you dont get in and out for $40. If you can't afford the best treatment plan or just dont want to pay for it then it is up to the owner and vet to figure out waht the best plan is for the pet.

I hear your complaint all the time. Wanna know what happens when you don't recommend the best possible plan and then things go down the hill? The same jackasses will turn around and start threatening to sue b/c you didn't recommend the Cadillac plan strong enough.

Medicine costs money - there isn't some secret factory making cheap medical equipment and medications for vets. Many of the same drugs and equipment are used in a vet hospital as a human one.

Some people want top notch care and up to date technology in vet medicine but don't wanna pay for it.

EDIT: I don't know anything about the hospital this guy went to but blanket statements from the guy I responded to are just dumb. If the treatment plan and costs are discussed to your satisfaction - find a new vet. 2 am with an emergency isn't a time to find a new ER vet. Go by and talk with one ahead of time to ensure you're comfortable with them.

I'm glad your dog is doing ok. May wanna seek out another ER hospital for future emergencies if this one made you feel like that.

My vet this morning pretty much said that we did exactly what she would've recommended. Obviously I don't expect every doctor to give the same care plan, but it just felt like this guy was trying to get me to just hand over the credit card, no questions asked. Like when you said it was silly to just have one treatment option, that's how he was approaching it. I actually didn't even get to see him again after he stormed out if the room...the vet tech had to keep running back and forth between the two of us. Maybe he was busy, probably was. Like I said, I'm just happy that my dog is doing ok and that I feel like I didn't get hosed in the process.

That's always reassuring to know your reg vet agreed with your plan. I'd just switch ER practices then - the one from last night sounds like a jerk. When discussing a possible life threatening situation and a bill that will top $1000 IMO there is no such thing as too busy. People deserve a good explanation when you're asking for that much money and you should demand nothing short of that.
