Buying a tablet today, what's the best buy

Original iPad finally bit the dust and I'm now looking to upgrade. I like the iPad but right now the Nexus 7 is looking like the one I want to get (mostly because of the price but specs seem excellent). Am I making a good choice or are there better options out there? Looking to spend under $400 but if it's in the Nexus range all the better.
Also I have an Android phone if that means anything.

I'm going to piggyback onto this thread. I need a new tablet, too.

Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 bought it on sale at Best Buy for $279. Perfect size and great overall tablet.

I would go iPad Mini or the Nexus 7. Im no longer a fan of the larger devices. Of the two smaller devices I have both. The price of the Nexus 7 is hard to beat. But I do like the dimensions of the mini slightly more. I got the mini free when I bought a bed. Cant go wrong with either of those two imo. I would not buy a Samsung or other non-Nexus Android. Once the device gets old they will not bother with updates. That's happed with my Asus Transformer.
