Also, let's not forget that if not for a pulled back in january in the final, Nadal probably would have become the first person since the 60's, and only the second male ever, to win each slam at least twice. That's pretty much the opposite of someone who can be labeled a one court specialist.

Stan was beating that arse well before the back strain. Back injury or not, Nadal was not going to win that match.

That said, Nadal is great on all surfaces. But the fact that he is the best ever on one gets him labelled as a specialist by some.

IMO the GOAT is either Laver or Sampras. The change to courts and attempts to slow the game have made the game the same on all surfaces.

Borg deserves to be in the conversation also. I find the game vanilla as there seems only one way to play, as mentioned before.

i like borg and his unique domination of grass/clay majors, but his failure to win a us open or aussie open (i assume it was also hardcourt) keep him out of the discussion ...

i think nadal has won enough on grass ... he needs to win a couple more us/aussie opens on hardcourt ...

IMO it is not the same as what Sampras, Borg, Mac, Laver played on. They let grass grow longer, they added weight to the ball.

I guess I just like a true serve volley game more than baseline stuff at Wimbledon.

Good for you. They changed the grass for a very good reason. Watch Ivanisevic v. Phillipoussis and report back.

If you read the entire post I clearly stated "struggled" in the context of being the GOAT
Directly compared to the others in the GOAT discussion,he has

BS. Borg still made four US open finals. No one played Aussie then. No one. Masters was a much bigger tourney back then.

Most of these greats, when they lose, it's not consistently in grand slam finals. You didn't beat Borg until a final. Period

but why didn't he win a us open? ... guy was incredible, but he never won a us open, which is the 3rd surface (unless i'm mistaken) ...

admittedly, i'm not a tennis player, but i enjoyed watching the big swede run around on sunday mornings in the finals ... his record is unique, to say the least ...

Who was beating him at US Open? Connors and Mac. Adjust for rackets and these current GOATS would have a tough time against them in NYC.

I think they treat it similar to racism, it's harder to bounce back from one of those two offenses unless you have enough posters vouching for you.

LOL, no.

If the admins banned people from this site for racism in the same manner that they did for porn, there would be about half the number of posters here and the policy board wouldn't exist.

Personally I believe his unprecedented dominance on Clayy in particular his performances at Roland Garros compensates for his lack of grass court game.

Nadal is already the clay court GOAT but would need as many slams as Fed with a few more Wimbledons to claim the overall GOAT.

GOAT on clay?

bullshite. Let Nadal and Guillermo Vilas in his prime get into a fight and see who wins.

Why does Nadal have to win Wimbledon a few more times to be in the running for GOAT? Fed won the French once. Sampras won it zero times.

Borg's US Open final losses were all on green clay. Back then, it really wasnt a true third surface.
