Immigration: The New Colossus

quote:
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
The poem is of course the one adorning the Statue of Liberty. I feel like a lot of folks have forgotten what this country is about. I feel like they have forgotten by whom this country was founded and how it came to be. I wonder where we'd be today if they American Indians had an immigration policy....

Thanks, Jizzy. He has already posted this.
Now we have another thread for him to wack off to while he sits in Japan and tells us how racist we are.
The problem isn't immigration. It's the flood of illegal immigration. What don't you fricking understand about that?

Times have changed. We're almost full now. We can be and should be more selective to whom we allow to become American citizens. It's our sovereign right. That poem doesn't represent America, it only represents its author and her opinion.

Then why does it adorn one of our national symbols? Immigrants aren't a problem. Unfettered welfare state is the problem.

Illegal immigrants are the problem.
Who is paying for their healthcare and housing in those warehouses? Is that not welfare?

You mean like....laws? I agree, it's like people have forgotten or something.

At least this guy knows the name of the poem.

True. I should give him credit for that.

IDK. But I'm sure there's an answer to your question on wiki. Also, national symbols don't make policy.

I'd agree in an ideal libertarian world but that world doesn't exist. Thus until we can get rid of the welfare state we have to be choosy in who we want to become new American citizens.

It says "Give me your tired," not "Sneak your tired here in a box truck for a $7000 fee."

I'm not weighing in on either side of this debate, but almost full? You serious, Clark? We aren't full by any conceivable definition of the word

The BIG difference is that people came to this country to WORK and build a life for themselfs and their families.
And most of it was done LEGALLY.
Now people come to this country to sponge off the hard-working descendants of those immigrants of yester-year.

Illegal immigrants aren't the problem. It's the free shite we give to people as part of the welfare state we've created.

You must be an ignorant SOB to think that translates to today's immigration problems.

Where are all of those children going to go? Who is paying for their food and healthcare AS WE SPEAK? That's welfare. Just because it isn't SSI or food stamps, doesn't mean it isn't welfare.
It's not immigration that's the problem. It's the way they are coming here. It's a burden on our healthcare system and taxpayers.
I disagree with welfare, but we should just cut off our own citizens to let in illegals?

From a financial standpoint, yes we are.

We are full of non-producers. We don't need more people that are living off the state. Let the skilled and productive in thought the legal immigration process to offset of the oversupply of non-producers.

Just pointing out that immigrants were not blindly allowed in at Ellis Island. They were subjected to tests on their healthiness, mental fitness, and ability to support themselves and not become a burden.

If you want to have any open door policy, get rid of all welfare, otherwise, it isn't economically feasible.
So, take your pick:
Open borders and no welfare
or
Welfare and stricter immigration
Those are your options. /thread

It's amazing how they're picking and choosing to fit their agenda.
How can they think that these children quarantined in warehouses is humane? Where are they going to go? Who is feeding them?
They are breaking the law by coming here illegally. They're already criminals. They're already breaking the law.
