To be honest, I believe it called for a contingent, but I'm not sure. I would have to research it, something I can't really do right now (work computers). However, Al-Maliki refused to authorize lease renewals for our bases. Unless Obama had played hard ball with Maliki, we were being kicked out, whether we wanted to go or not.
The real issue is all of the leniency we (both the Bush and Obama administrations) have given the atrocious Maliki regime. The guy has been a sectarian thug through and through.

For the record, I don't know if he's a traitor, that's gonna be hard to prove. He's definitely a deserter and certainly not a hero worthy of the price the President decided that we should pay to get him back.

They're not even going to try to prove he's a traitor -- that would make the Dear Leader look bad. And, any top brass at the Pentagon who would EVEN SUGGEST such a thing will suddenly be forced to go out on early retirement.
But, it's a FACT that he left his base with the goal of looking for the Enemy. Do you think he just wanted to have a cup of tea with them while they all sat around laughing smoking their pipes? Do you think he really thought that if he could find a couple that he could single-handedly end the conflict and show them how they were "wrong"?
Then, according to the true heroes on the ground, the enemy started hitting them in vulnerable spots - something the enemy had not done in the past.
