IIRC the ref didn't see Zidane's headbutt in 06 did he?
Pretty sure one of the assistants saw it.

Yes. Happens frequently enough as well.

I believe all he can do is inform the head ref of what he saw. It's up to the field ref to decide if he trust his crew or not.

Could be wrong

The AR can tell the ref what he saw. Then it's up to the ref to make the call. In a situation like this, he'll act on what the AR saw 99% of the time.

is there some hand signal between the asst and head ref or just yell out something like "hey, give 16 blue a red card"?

They have headsets.

Television Match Official

If officials have a question, they ask the TMO. Kinda like a poor man's replay booth.

Yeah, the assistant doesn't give the card but tells the head official what he/she saw.

Usually happens more often for Red Cards (where they see a punch or something) or Penalties than simple yellow cards.

Then no, soccer doesn't have that.

I'll say this... it took an act of Congress to get goal line technology

think they're going to be even more resistant for something like that

Ironic that Serie A is one of the only leagues to use an extra official always watching the penalty area from around the goal and that was needed today.

It was needed for the penalty Brazil got in the first match too.

What if FIFA ends up doing nothing about this, citing lack of evidence or some shite...what then?

Then FIFA gives the green light for all sorts of nonsense on the pitch.

ETA:Rafa Marquez will stab someone before the Mexicans get sent home.
