Why are the Pels so strapped for cash?

Damnit it's not like our roster is loaded with superstars. How can Houston afford to go after guys like Lebron when they already have Harden, Howard on the roster?

They can't. They have to dump Asik and Lin first. Asik is good enough to probably not have to pay to dump, but they'll have to pay a draft pick to get someone to take Lin. It's really not much different than being able to dump Ryno for free but pay someone to take Gordon. If we didn't want to keep Ryno long term and were prepared to pay to dump Gordon we could do what Houston is doing. The difference is Houston has become a playoff team that many feel are a star away from contending. No top level star is going to go to a team that hasn't made the playoffs in 3 years so the Pelicans aren't looking to create cap space and get into the LeBron/Melo sweepstakes.

Well, Houston doesn't have the space to sign another big-name player at the moment. But they say they can clear the space by getting rid of Asik, Lin, and others.
Apparently they already have deals lined up to clear the space.
I don't know enough about the financial aspect of the NBA to say why the Pelicans can't clear space to sign a big-name player.

They can't unless they get rid of Asik and Lin first without taking back additional salary. If we can get rid of Gordon without taking back salary(not happening), we would be able to afford Lebron or Melo aslo.

Check the contracts of some of the players.

We could if EG wasn't around.
Hopefully that gets remedied soon

Sorry if these questions are common knowledge but I have 2:
1. I assume the Rockets can't afford a 3rd star with Lin, even if they were to trade Asik. Correct?
2. Who the hell is going to trade for Jeremy Lin and pay him $15 million? That team may be interested in getting an expiring but wouldn't they have to send a bad contract back subsequently screwing Houston?

We have no motivation to. If landing LeBron was a legit prospect you can bet Demps would be looking at trading anyone besides AD to clear the cap space and make it happen.

True.I don't think we need a LeBron though because of the Core we have with Davis..All we need is a decent enough SF and Center and I think we will be straight.

They'd have to trade both to afford a star in any case.

Last year Utah took on the contracts of Richard Jefferson and Andris Biedrins for picks when Golden State was trying to create cap space to sign Iggy. It's actually pretty common practice for rebuilding teams to take on bad deals for picks.

I hope so......not sure Demps is the guy to build the roster though. Hopefully Benson runs him off this year if we don't make a serious push to at least make the playoffs......injuries/no injuries. Excuse time is over.

Let's wait until we see more than 5-10 games between the healthy core.

We probably would've been in the playoffs if not for freak injuries. It's just a case of shite happens. It's not an excuse it just was what it was.
The big issue was monty not starting tyreke over AFA a long time ago and his love affair with steam.
The demps hate sometimes puzzles me.

The majority of our money is tied into 3 guys, none of whom are true impact players. It's quite depressing, actually.
Rya Anderson and AD23 combined don't make as much as Gordon

Isn't Lin's contract set up like Asik's? I can see a team taking one of them on, but ~$15m in cap space while paying out an extra $15m on top of that in real money... that's significant to any owner. I would be shocked if they could get a team to take on both of them without sending contracts back.

Are you talking about Tyreke/Jrue/Lemonhead?
You'd be right on lemonhead but the former 2 you're off.
If not for lemons would the people that sometimes bitch about Jrue/Tyreke still have reason to bitch?

Lin's is exactly the same
