Personally, my goal is to have the MBA title. Honestly, you can learn absolutely all of the topics by reading The 10-Day MBA book. It'll take you at most 10 days, but then all you have is the knowledge, but nothing that anyone can verify from a cursory glance at your resume. I've owned my own (quite successful) IT consulting company for 20 years, but without an MBA, there are conversations that I've found that I'm excluded from. All of the material from the MBA can easily be obtained, but the actual title from an accredited school is what holds weight in many cases (in my opinion and experience).
Longhornedtiger, I just wanted to say I related very closely to your post. I've run a successful commercial real estate brokerage for over 12 years. I saw the MBA as an avenue to obtain more sophisticated corporate clients. I can happily say it has worked out as I had hoped.
The majority of these clients have MBAs and tend to show more respect for a broker who has made the same academic commitment.
In this world perception is reality, and having an MBA is a key part of the perception game in the business world.

MBAs don’t really Impress people with MBAs. The corporate world I live in is riddled with credentials that don’t actually qualify the holders to do anything. An MBA may be a useful title, and it may even get you a promotion, if that is the model your corporation follows. But, if there is one thing that I have learned from this program, it is to not be in awe of someone because they have an MBA. An undergrad business degree is more impressive.
This isn’t a knock against LSUS. I compared the course work with a friend who just finished a top 10 full time program, and the conclusion was that the content and difficulty was comparable.

I am about to take my first class with Vines for FIN701 AP1 in January. I see he is highly recommended. Can anyone provide any materials I can pre-read like a syllabus or anything else his class requires?

What do you think about taking Finance 701 with Vines ? Is there a better choice over him ?
Vines is the best instructor for FIN 701. Definitely take the course with him.

I agree that an MBA doesn't impress people with MBAs, but for a lot of those people (IMO), it is the minimum buy-in for a seat at the table.

Can anyone offer any suggestions on how you are studying for MADM701?
Posted on 12/6/19 at 1:19 pm to socal77
I was Just accepted and will begin classes in Spring, I'm pretty excited and feel like 10 classes is very doable. My undergrad was in microbiology and biochemistry, but I have had my own business for the last 5 and half years. @Socal I work in Real Estate as well and have been following your posts and this entire thread for days reading and catching up. I'm thankful to everyone taking the time to share and post their thoughts and class experiences. I'm trying to find a schedule that is doable while I work and have two little babies at home. I have signed up for FIN 701- Choi and MADM 760-Heller for AP1. I know people have said good things about both Vines and Choi for FIN, both are available for AP1...if anyone has the syllabus for either FIN 701- Choi or MADM 760-Heller classes I would really appreciate it. dreamdevelopmentfl@gmail.com
Also if Vines is a better choice over Choi I can still switch. Thoughts?

Vines allows excel and didn't use a proctor. Choi is old school and only allows a calculator which some people like. That's been the main distinction.

I do wonder if Vines is going to HAVE to start using a proctor, if not already, due to the program changes.
Does anyone have a syllabus or any additional information on professors for the following courses:
Spring AP1
FIN 701: Kim Sung (haven't heard much of anything on him; currently, alternative options are Vines and Choi)
Acct 701: Fabio Ambrosio (I've read up on him)
Spring AP2
FIN 740: Kim Sung
Isds 705: Gibbs
You can email me at limabean0327@hotmail.com if you have anything!!
Thanks!

Does Shaughnessy curve?
Posted on 12/8/19 at 11:22 pm to kikicub
Just a reminder as new people join tiger droppings and want to know about professors, files, etc. There is a pretty good facebook group to join if you have not already. Just search LSUS MBA Program. Has a bunch of syllabi in the files and professor reviews and other support about doubling certain courses.

Ambrosio for accounting is great. I enjoyed his class. Lots of problem-solving for the test, using some algebra mainly, i.e solving for the missing variable. I prefer classes that focus on the execution of concepts vs memorizing information.
Gibbs is good. Straight forward with what he asks of you. Some weeks have more time-consuming assignments than others, but nothing unmanageable. I will say his tests were a little harder than some other courses, but mainly because I didn't like reading each chapter. Read the chapters and you'd be fine.

Agree on Gibbs. He likes to get you thinking and focused on your career with his little projects which is fine. Just a note for those that have not taken him, if you have a CAPM or PMP cert from PMI you basically skip half the class. You can also get out of the Excel assignments if you have the Microsoft Excel cert. Not sure if other professors are the same way. Having had the PMP cert saved me alot of time and made for an easy double.

Would someone please check if the Hsieh Fin710 textbook is on the Facebook group, and let me know? I don’t want to join Facebook just to find out.

Happy to see many new members starting the program as well, good luck to you all on our first semester! I'm sure we will lean on this thread for info and feedback to make it through the program.
