Thank you! Does anyone know what page I can find advice on pairing courses? Or does anyone have any advice? I am trying to decide what classes I should double up on. After James, I am terrified to choose on my own as I thought MKT 701 would be a breezy but boy was I wrong.

It's been discussed in depth on here. My advice is to just read through the various pages of the thread or to use the search function under "Money Talk"

BeckyBLU,
I'm not sure why people down vote when they could ignore or give advice. Either way...
My suggestion for you is to Google the classes you are interested in. For instance, MADM 70?, ISDS 70?, etc...with the name "tigerdroppings"
It has helped me in the past. Or you can just ask with your desired classes. 200+ pages is a lot but there are people that would be more than willing to help. Also, there are a lot of new classes and many people may not be familiar with them.
MKT701 is one of the busiest classes in the program. After that (with the exception of the newer classes), other classes aren't as busy, with some having no busy work at all. Again, just give your desired list of classes for the upcoming semester. Put some research in it as most of us are MBA/full time job, parents, etc...
Good luck!!!

As JeauxCool pointed out, your best bet is to search. Click on "Money Talk" just below this post or at the top of the page. There is a search button at the top of the Money Talk forum. Of course, you'll be searching all of Money Talk, not simply this thread.
Searching just this thread is a little trickier but doable. For example, I'm searching for every occurrence of the word "pairing" in this specific thread. (You might also just search for specific classes instead).
LINK
Putting "Site:" and a URL limits Google's search to that particular website. Putting "LSUS Online MBA Reviews" in quotes ensures that it's searching just this thread since every thread page will have that exact phrasing on it. Everything else (the "pairing" in my example) can be typed without quotes, unless you need a string of words matched exactly.
The information is in this thread but you're going to have to put forth some work. Before I started the program I created a spreadsheet with every class I needed and searched for every class in this thread, taking notes on each course so I would have little tips for myself as I setup my schedule.

Poll:
MKT710 with Darrat for AP1
or
MADM701 with Willaims for AP1
I will be taking ACCT 701 AP1 as well
------------------
I tripled: MADM701-Williams / FIN701-Vines / ACCT701-Ambrosio
I pulled A's in all, but deadlines were coming fast and furious! I would have enjoyed FIN701 + ACCT701 to delve deeper at a reasonable pace and enjoy them. MADM701 was a surprise and took the time of 3 courses with the multiple assignment formats and exam topics with mixed terminologies on memorizing lists with crossover definitions (unless you have a photographic memory to differentiate proximal definitions and be tested on shades of differences.)
Recommend Paring MADM701 with a lighter workload course or by itself if you have a busy life.

I think probably depends on who you have for MADM701 as well as your past experience. I think the workload for Knotts has been fine. I've spent probably 1/5 of the time on it than FIN701 this semester. All the conflicting theory stuff aside, it's definitely been easier reading for me overall than FIN's MS Word doc. Most of Knotts's exams have been straight forward overall IMO.

You've spent that much time on FIN701? I thought MADM 701 was a time drain. Not necessarily because it was hard (my grade is good), but because there is so much material and closed book tests. I have easily spent more study time on this class than any other. What makes FIN701 so bad? Does it have closed book tests as well?

quote:I can't speak for craig_miamifl but I spent a good amount of time on FIN 701 when I took it, attempting to make sure I really understood the concepts. I hadn't really dove into financial equations since undergrad many years ago and I found his Word document / study guide often as confusing as it was helpful. I actually thought the book the class used was decent, which they have since gotten rid of. My understanding is that Vines has simply expanded his study guide to cover more material. I enjoyed the contrast of the more formal text book to the more conversational style he used in the study guide. It provided variety.

The tests weren't proctored but they were only 60 minutes that go by quick and the questions come from a randomly selected question bank. So, you could end up taking a completely different test than a classmate. The questions are also just a text box where you type in your equations and answers or explain concepts in your own words. It was an intimidating class for me at the beginning. About halfway through, though, I began getting pretty comfortable with the material and his test style.
Having said that, I've spent a decent amount of time on MADM 701 as well, though it feels more like I'm just going through the motions. I'm not wrestling with concepts (as I was in FIN 701) but I am cramming a lot of information and lists into my brain for regurgitation on the tests.

@Jasons_MBA_Acct Who do you have for MADM701? I currently have Knotts and work load is manageable. (Weekly 35q exam,500+ word concept application paper,150+ word responses on ~4 Q&As). As DieDaily indicated, it's a lot of cramming. Knotts has been good about putting more conceptual material than the overload of theoretical stuff.
I have little in the way of finance experience. It's been far and away the most difficult of the 6 I've taken to date. JMO The course really could use a textbook to fill in the gaps. Often times his reading guide leaves a lot to be desired for someone in the position of learning concepts. It really just jumps around and many times hard to determine what he's talking about or where he's got #s from. It's material coming from an expert perspective. I think a textbook would definitely provide more depth to the concepts and improve learning.
Most of the stuff covered I've used outside sources to get a more thorough understanding of concepts. He's a lenient grader so if you go through reading guide and practice problems you'll do fine. I would advise if you have little or no finance experience to get a head start on it if you can.
Only have 60 min for 10 questions. Be sure you know Excel and/or use financial calculator as it'll be a life saver on the exams having those formulas in there. Rewrite his reading guide in your own words so you can copy/paste your material to answer his questions

I have used this to search this forum for the last year. This forum has invaluable information. However, we have to remember that the program has changed. Classes change as well as instructors teaching styles. We need to answer these questions from a new prospective seeing as how some of the post are now outdated. There are 238 pages now. Its nice to hear what students that have recently taken the courses think. I would hate to direct new students to post from 18 months ago and the class has now changed. I just want to make sure we keep the thread current. Things have truly changed since fall AP1 started.

@craig_miamifl - I have Knotts as well. I agree about the cramming - it's as if they're determined to make this class harder than it has to be. Literally any class would be this hard if they tested the way MADM 701 does. I do appreciate the assignments and videos. I see the relevance, but the tests are unnecessarily difficult for no reason. (And I have a good grade - I'm not moaning because I'm bitter. Lol)
As for Fin 701, any recommendations for a head start? I plan on taking it in Summer AP1. TIA.

Agreed. I am currently in the program and some information is outdated. It would help if we keep the new information flowing and stop down voting useful information because it's unpopular. It can be deceiving to those who are interested/new to the program.
.....but that's just me. Have at it.

We also have to keep in mind that not every down-vote in this thread is from other LSUS MBA students. This thread exists on the Money board of a much broader site, though I suspect most people here don't venture beyond this specific thread. I think there are probably people who frequent the Money board at large who are just tired of seeing this thread continually get bumped and pop in to just down-vote everything. It's the only way I can rationalize why completely innocuous posts get one or two red arrows nearly every time.
So yeah...the "old-timers" should probably be a little more patient and the new-comers probably need to make sure they've done a little solo digging before posting. (And try to ignore the down-votes because jerks.)

Why do people care so much about down votes anyway? They don't have any kind of impact on the person who received or gave the vote. Who cares.
For those of you in Vines 701 class, I posted a link to the PDF version of the text many pages ago. So if you think it will help, search for the link. I think the excel tool kits from the text helped me out a ton. I was able to set up every problem, even the most intricate ones in excel by manipulating the tool kits. Doing that also helped me to understand how the formula worked and how it relates to things as a whole.
When using excel, I think I remember making several versions of some formulas that differed in terms of number of time periods, etc.. That way on the exam all I had to do was plug numbers in for the answer and copy & paste the formula for some partial credit if necessary.

Any ISDS 702 folks in here? If so, what the heck are yall studying for the final?

I really need your advice on what to study for FIN701 module 4 exam. There are not many calculation problems and the reading guide is confusing with many theories. Do you guys read other materials to prepare for the test?

@Jasons_MBA_Acct
SkipDigs provided the FIN701 text (I believe it's on/around page 177). I've been looking at it the last couple modules. Wish I had seen beforehand as I've felt like I've been playing catchup the entire course. It provides a lot more depth to the topics/concepts he goes over in the guide.
I'd highly recommend just getting accustomed with those concepts ahead of time. It'll likely make the reading guide easier to comprehend rather than having to search most of what he's talking about each module. If you stick to the reading guide and are able to put what he provides in your own words, no reason won't do fine. Reading Guide and Excel are your 2 best friends in that course.

Thrilled to be done with MADM701. Williams must have had a pretty bad grade split to offer 110 extra credit points, but thanks to those my 4.0 should remain intact at least. I gave her a review on RMP, but it appears several others did just this month, and they are accurate. 3 classes left......

For FIN 701 what I did back when we had the book was I read & outlined the sections that corresponded to the study guide. Large portions of the text were not necessary, but I read them anyway because you might get asked to define a term that was in the text. (Ctrl F). I also watched some youtube videos. Just make sure you are organized with word documents and spreadsheets for quick reference. Also we were able to extract a few possible test questions from Vines during the zoom sessions. These zoom sessions were very valuable. I would go back & re-watch the recording and take notes. (make sure he hits the record button). I made a sheet with possible test questions and answers. I had many times where it was simply cut and paste.

Thanks @SkipDigs and @craig_miamifl! I have downloaded the various the book and spreadsheets mentioned on the last few pages. My future self will be very grateful. Thanks for the help.
